Early blooming morning glory, tall morning glory

What morning glory varieties bloomed earliest for you? Which varieties grew to 10 feet or more? (I'm guessing that these will be different varieties than the early bloomers.) Did you winter sow the MGs or direct seed them. If you winter sowed them...do you think you got earlier blooms or taller plants with the WS plants? I'm looking to cover a large area and want some early bloomers, but also some that will cover the roof of the open structure.

My ivy leafed small light blue morning glories bloomed first and got to about four foot tall. The Early morning, or tall mix got tallest at about ten foot and bloomed much later.
Because they needed to be sown after frost I didn't see a lot of difference between my direct sown and winter sown. I didn't use the best soil though and my drainage was bad. This year I'm doing more and will be direct sowing for ease of planting out.

Floodthelast, your ivy leafed small light blue MGs are adorable. I'll look for seeds for them because I want some early blooms. I won't be picky about the height if they bloom early. Today I picked up three other varieties from one of the inexpensive seed racks that just went up at Wal-Mart. For less than $1 I can try all three kinds and see how they do. Hope at least one grows tall!

I think the trick with morning glories is that they can last a very long time in the ground. So some don't come up for a long time and others get killed off by the frosts. That's why they come back reliably for my Mother who had soil saturated with thousands of seeds and not so much for me who has only started planting them the last year or so. I read that the seeds can stay viable for ten years which explains why some of them don't show up right away. It also means that I will trade for Mg's no matter how old they are. :) I would take extra precautions if yours sprout early. I noticed last year my winter sown ones sprouted about a week after the ones that were coming up outside on their own. A blanket might work too.

I also live in Ottawa and I find the only way to get plants in pots to flower well and early is to fertilize every two weeks or so with just a regular water-soluble fertilizer (20-20-20). This year I am using a pelleted fertilizer which you sprinkle on the surface of the soil. They get a little feed with each watering. As an example, I grew a Brugmansia for 3 years without getting a bloom, until last year, when I fertilized regularly. It was worth the wait. I used to go 'all organic' but pots just can't provide the required nutrients (no worms, instant compost,etc). Another thing I use in my pots is Soil Moist so I don't have to water every day, except in very hot periods. I use lots of containers to avoid slug damage, and also to get sun which is limited in my garden (North facing and lots of trees). Hope this helps.

Well there is blooms on mine, and have been for atleast two weeks now. They were planted last year. LOL Actually, they self seeded from last years. So not sure how long they took, but they took, and are now trying to take over the flower bed. Had to pull a few out this afternoon, so that they wouldn't strangle the other plants. Both spots that they are growing from self seeding from last year are in full sun. If remember correctly, are they not ones that if wanted to grow faster, needed to be soaked or nicked with a knife, for they are hard seeds? Maybe that to is why it is takeing so long to get blooms if you planted them late. However, I never done that to mine. Usually plant though at first sign of no frost. Don't give up, be patient. Worth the wait.

Morning Glories in full bloom at 7pm

Until yesterday I only saw my Morning Glories in gorgeous bloom in the morning and wilt off by noon. But yesterday (Sep 13, zone 6) I caught them still in bloom at 7 pm!! They started wilting sometime after 8 at night. Is this normal?...or at least normal for early Fall? Or did I stumble upon a mutant?
