I'm the King of Wind Roses and I'm at your service. If they're really rocking with the wind, you'll see a bit of a "hole" around the base as the wind tries to work them out of the ground. Don't worry, it won't. I agree with the above, staking them gives you temporary sanity, but long term, other than their angle, it shouldn't harm the roses....I just throw a little compost down the "hole" to fill it in. If the wind breaks off canes, just treat it as "natural pruning" and move on. Most importantly, those new canes/basal breaks...keep them tipped off to make sure they get nice and broad at the base before they get too tall to protect them. That looks like midge to me. I've had it bad for years thanks to neighbor's weed-choked yard -- I treat my beds but the little bastards survive on the other side of the picket fence where my spray won't reach. Bayer Complete Insect Killer (imidacloprid/cyfluthrin) is the only thing I've found that puts a dent in them. I spread the granule form in early spring before mulching, water it in, then do occasional reinforcing shots with the hose-end sprayer liquid form during the growing season. I hate using chemicals, but if I didn't, I'd have no blooms. They are hard to eradicate because their life cycle is very short. The chemical kills the ones in the ground, but then the larvae drop out of the damaged foliage above and start a new generation every 10 days or so. You have to be persistent.

Well, Cecily, I'm glad my trials & tribulations are SO entertaining & comical for you, meanwhile I'm shaking my fist at these damned pests! ;) I'm doing things much outside my comfort zone & I'm thoroughly enjoying it, except for certain things like hoping I didn't unknowingly smear a sawfly larva in my hair, freshly plucked from a leaf, when I wiped the sweat from my brow, or the sinking feeling of "wait, is that a spider mite web I feel across my face or is that just a single strand of my own hair that I'm feeling?! Oh God, what if I have spider mites IN MY MOUTH?!" Yes, it may not sound like when I'm posting every little new critter I come across, but I really am having fun with these roses! It's relaxing (believe it or not) and quite fulfilling (already) & I'm super stoked I can share my experiences with like-minded people who give me advice & input, because I really think my husband is getting tired of hearing me talk about roses already...

Since your rose is like starting with a bare root rose now it might also help to mist the canes. Since there are no leaves to give cover to the canes from sun, heat or drying winds. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Every bare root I've ever received from like Palatine comes with advice to cover or hill up the plant to prevent the canes from drying out. Maybe this is only with fresh bare roots coming out of storage. That I don't know just seems like a little shade or wind protection could help.
