It's very exciting, isn't it? I'm currently patiently waiting for mine to flower for the first time. The bud seems to have been sitting there not doing much for ages. With my luck I"ll blink and miss it! :)

I'm glad you told me that yours has only flowered twice in 15 years.
I got one at the Cactus show in Brisbane last year and was disappointed when it didn't flower this year.
I won't give up hope then.

Pam I was like you, the anticipation was killing me, once I realised it was a flower and not leaves.
Jan, it's an Aroid and has that horrible smell that Aroids tend to have, though it only lasts for a little while, unlike most of the others. It only flowers the once, once the flower dies the main plant will grow. I'm not sure how long the flower lasts, the last time this one flowered was about 5 years ago & I can't remember how long it lasted. They grow to about a meter tall and have a wonderful stripey stem, they form bulbis on the leaves, towards the end of their growing period and then die down for the winter.

It is a great looking thing even for the leaves and the stem but the flower is an extra bonus. I see something peeking out of one of my pots but haven't had flowers for a couple of years. You may get seeds, too, apart from your plant bulbils.

Interesting looking plant. The speckling sets it off. Love the bird.

MM: yes we had serveral storms come through Sunday afternoon, however, as usual, the heaviest rain passed us by. I seem to live in a rain shadow, our depot on an industrial estate is only 5km from our house, often it absolutely pours down there, yet back at home we just get light rain or sometimes none at all. Like the industrial estate really needs rain? :-)
