I'm kind of in shock

The amazing rose grows in Aussie land???? call me nieve or a believer of history but I was under an impression that roses can only grow in the northern hemisphere I just think its cool that you guys who have summer during our winter get roses to grow. Way to go on every effort you make. Now if you could just fill me in on how I can get a colorful coral reef up here in New England that would be just assume too. I know it won't happen but I am still amazed to know that a southern hemisphere can grow roses bravo to you all...

I cannot believe I am reading this .. Roses grow all over the world !!!!!

Hi wesley-butterflies

They grow in the Sub-Tropics where I live in SE Queensland and bloom all year round.
They grow further south where it even colder in the Winter but they don't bloom in the Winter there only in the warmer Seasons.

I took this Pic of Iceberg very late yesterday its on top of one of my Arches I am too old to be climbing up on ladders these days to take pics
So I put my 300mm lens on and the 1.4 extender that gave made my 300mm telephoto lens into 420mm so I could get a decent close up.
It was 35ð Celsius yesterday with a strong wind blowing all day.

Iceberg and gathering the Pollen is one of the Australian Stingless Bees Trigona carbonaria

Took this pic a few days earlier one of my favourite David Austin Roses.

Jude the Obscure..

{{gwi:2114959}}

Even our tiny green Litoria fallax Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs love our roses..

Gold Bunny and Friend in March after a shower of rain that we don't get much of taken too early one morning.

{{gwi:2114960}}

We even have local residents that come and eat the bad insects on our Roses..
I wish it has eaten the Scale on this pretty scarlet rose La Sevillana.

We call this one Dusty it is a Bearded Dragon and often pops in for a feed.

{{gwi:2114961}}

I don't know if you know of this rose Olympic Gold 2000.
Put out for the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000.

{{gwi:2114962}}

I grow Standards, bush roses, climbers, pillars roses, ramblers, carpet roses and a few mini ones, not many at all actually about 40 plus.
I know people that grow hundreds of even better roses suited to our warmer climate..

Cannot think why it would be a shock to find that we in the Southern Hemisphere can grow roses.
The same as gardeners in the Northern Hemisphere can.. Hope this Helps..

Sorry I don't think a Coral Reef would survive in the cold waters up your way but its nice to dream.

Cheers... Mary-Anne

Yes up here in New England coral reef is just a dream I did however watch a 6 hour (no pop up ads) coral reef show on that HDTV thinggie. It was a very very nice 6 hour dream

What shocks me is I read one of them rose books and it said only northern hemisphere. I just didn't know and bumpt into this OZ thred anyways. OMG wow wonderfull pics and free lizards too ( outher thing we don't get up here ) I am simply in awww
Thank you so so very much

I'll be sure to wipe my feet before coming into OZ threads and send some cheers in every now and then. Don't worry about hurting my eyes to much and in return I won't show any snow

God Bless yah Mary-Anne

I never got good repeat from either AWAKENING or NEW DAWN, and the fragrance was never more than moderate in strength. Most of time I couldn't smell a thing. The VIKING QUEEN I gave my MIL repeat bloomed the first year as a tiny own root band. Last year my MIL sprayed VQ once a month and the glossy, deep green foliage remained spotless. This year she hasn't sprayed at all and the gorgeous climbing rose is still clean as a whistle. The fragrance IS consistently stronger. My MIL lives in MD, USDA Zone 6a. As for which rose is more beautiful, judge for yourself. Here is an image posted by Zeffyrose on the "Your favorite climber for a pergola" thread back in June, 2010. VIKING QUEEN is on the left, and NEW DAWN is on the right.

Is $22.05 sq. ft. for 12x12 carrara reasonable?

It not only depends on where you are, but also the quality of the stone. I've seen carrara on sale for 5.00 a foot that I wouldn't put in my dog's house. If you figure 10-12.00 a foot between the tile, cement board (or other underlayment or prep), thinset and grout, and then the balance for labor, you're in the ball park. Not in the "cheap seats" to be sure, but definitely in the ballpark. Same with the travertine. In fact, I'd expect that to be more than the carrara, both for material and installation, being that it's large format tile.

Granite sticker shock

Hi Karlsmom, I live in Ohio, not far from Indy & IMO you are being told too high of price for your granite. I recall looking at what felt like hundreds of slabs when I picked out my granite & remember Venetian Gold being one of them. I ended up going with Madura Gold (picture below of my granite) & paid around $50 a sq ft & got 52 sq ft, so, it cost around $3000.00 that price incl template, labor & installation costs, it incl everything but the sink, which I bought separately, they just did the cutouts for it. Everyone's right, you really have to shop around at several fabricators, because, although, they all get their slabs for the same slab yard or two, they, themselves are very different on their price quotes, I found that out also when I was shopping around for a fabricator. The same slab went anywhere from $50 to almost $90 a sq ft, depending on the fabricator. Angie's list is a good place to check out how long they've been in the business & how well people feel they do their work. Good luck, I would think your granite would be around the same as mine, based on the category I remember it being in. I know the Venetian Gold granite was really nice, so, I hope you can find a fabricator that will do it for a decent price, I know you'll love it.

Maybe ORB on all the cabinets to go with the pantry door hardware? I think those would go fine with your lights, and be less stark than black on the cream island. I also think it's more important to match door hardwares than door hardware to lights. To me, the first chandelier looks Tuscan and the last one looks more French Country. (But that's only an impression, no real knowledge of authenticity of those styles.) Would you use the hooks on the last chandelier? With the structure it has (rods and loops attached to the chain by hooks), it looks more related to your table fixture, even though I kind of like the first fixture better and think it would look great over your glazed cream island. Bottom line: I think either will look nice with the cabinets and fine with the table fixture, so go with what you like best. No matter which you choose I think I can pretty much guarantee that no one will come into your lovely kitchen and say that it's all great except for 'that fixture.' ;-)

Hi again Wes, just come back from Holidays so I missed your reply though I went over to the USA Rose Forum and seen lots of replies you put on.. I was going to send you a internal email telling you I replied to your Topic but I forgot as I was busy packing.. Can I blame it on old age..

I understand what you mean by what you read in books it can be very misleading to us down under in OZ also. Some people are shocked when I tell them I dig up my Standards in the 36° C heat and transplant them elsewhere when they are not doing so well in a certain place, they say it should only be done in the Winter when they are dormant, no such thing as dormant here in the Sub-Tropics mind you Wes I give them lots of TLC for a few weeks making sure they get watered everyday for a while and I give them a shower of Seasol its liquid seaweed that usually helps..

Feel free to pop over any time for a visit, I am so glad you like our bearded dragons, I would love to see some of your delightful snow it can be very cooling on a hot Summer Day but then its still Spring here in Oz and the temp today only got to 31°C today so not hot at all..

Looking forward to future visits from you.. Cheers Mary-Anne

I've read that roses are *native* only in the northern hemisphere, but some of the most fabulous roses were hybrized in Australia/New Zealand/etc using imported stock.
