The amazing rose grows in Aussie land???? call me nieve or a believer of history but I was under an impression that roses can only grow in the northern hemisphere I just think its cool that you guys who have summer during our winter get roses to grow. Way to go on every effort you make. Now if you could just fill me in on how I can get a colorful coral reef up here in New England that would be just assume too. I know it won't happen but I am still amazed to know that a southern hemisphere can grow roses bravo to you all...

They grow in the Sub-Tropics where I live in SE Queensland and bloom all year round.
They grow further south where it even colder in the Winter but they don't bloom in the Winter there only in the warmer Seasons.

I took this Pic of Iceberg very late yesterday its on top of one of my Arches I am too old to be climbing up on ladders these days to take pics
So I put my 300mm lens on and the 1.4 extender that gave made my 300mm telephoto lens into 420mm so I could get a decent close up.
It was 35ÃÂ° Celsius yesterday with a strong wind blowing all day.

We even have local residents that come and eat the bad insects on our Roses..
I wish it has eaten the Scale on this pretty scarlet rose La Sevillana.

We call this one Dusty it is a Bearded Dragon and often pops in for a feed.

I grow Standards, bush roses, climbers, pillars roses, ramblers, carpet roses and a few mini ones, not many at all actually about 40 plus.
I know people that grow hundreds of even better roses suited to our warmer climate..

Cannot think why it would be a shock to find that we in the Southern Hemisphere can grow roses.
The same as gardeners in the Northern Hemisphere can.. Hope this Helps..

Sorry I don't think a Coral Reef would survive in the cold waters up your way but its nice to dream.

Yes up here in New England coral reef is just a dream I did however watch a 6 hour (no pop up ads) coral reef show on that HDTV thinggie. It was a very very nice 6 hour dream

What shocks me is I read one of them rose books and it said only northern hemisphere. I just didn't know and bumpt into this OZ thred anyways. OMG wow wonderfull pics and free lizards too ( outher thing we don't get up here ) I am simply in awww

Oh my gosh, what a surprise to see my old thread pop up! It was, all in all, a great trip for them all. What worked? Just about everything . . . and thanks to everyone for the wonderful advice! ~ Sleeping arrangements: DD and 2 of the girls fit nicely in DD's room (bed, window seat bed and single mattress on floor). The two other girls slept out on our living room sofas. That room closes off with 3 sets of French doors, so they had a bit of privacy, at least. The 2 guys slept in our guest room. Bathrooms: I decided before anyone arrived that, with seven 18 & 19 year olds in one house, there would be no long baths; only quick showers. So, I put 2 wood tv tables in the bathtub with a laundry basket on each. One held big stacks of folded bath towels and washcloths. The other was for the used ones. I told them not to hang the damp ones. The nightmare of many wet towels hanging everywhere inspired that decision. Great one on my part!!! I just washed and replaced the towels every afternoon while they were out sightseeing. I also had stocked both guest bathrooms with a box of essentials: from travel-size tubes of toothpaste, deodorants, Kleenex; small combs, Tylenol, Tums, Chapstick, toothbrushes, girl essentials, sunscreen. Thank goodness, as they were pretty much all used! ~ I put a supply of local postcards, stamps and pens in each bedroom for them to send postcards quickly and easily. Also a supply of local travel books to inspire their daily outings. ~Food/Meals: as I expected, they ate like they were all starving. They loved my meals . . . even the vegetarian. I'd stocked up on enough snacks to keep them all happy. Thank goodness! ~Sightseeing: LOL LOL LOL!!! None of them had been to New Mexico before and their expectations were funny, to say the least. We have small herds of wild horses, but they're wild, not kept in pens. Our visitors wanted DD to drive them , wherever they were so that they could "pet them" and take pics! That didn't happen (LOL), but they did see some occasionally here and there. Same with coyotes. DD had to warn them not to make a big deal about any Native Americans they saw. They tried to speak Spanish to people here, which was met with patience and kindness (thank goodness!). Our chile was "too hot", but they loved exploring Santa Fe and Albuquerque. And Madrid, NM, where the movie "Wild Hogs" was filmed. What didn't work? Well, getting 7 college freshmen to agree on anything, such as where to go exploring next or what movie to watch, was a PIA for DD. One gal turned out to be a hypochondriac, which frustrated the rest. And, DS & his girlfriend decided at the last minute to cancel their hotel reservations and sleep on a queen-size air mattress in our foyer (the only place left!), as they stopped by for a few days on their way to his new job in Tucson, AZ. So, we ended up with a real houseful . . . but it was a lot of fun. Would we do it again? Yes, if DD asked. Would DD do it again? Absolutely not. She said it was fun but exhausting. This Spring Break she's bringing (just) two of her close friends/sorority sisters here to celebrate her 21st birthday. They'll dance at some of the higher end (read: safe) clubs. Shop Santa Fe and ABQ Uptown. Visit Madrid and The Tram. Eat out at some favorite spots and generally spend all the money their parents promised them for this year's Spring Break on themselves instead of an expensive hotel room. Their first choice, Austin, TX, was pretty much already booked up, as South by Southwest will be there at the same time. They were looking at $500/night for modest hotel rooms and super-inflated SbSW ticket prices! So, we'll be entertaining again, but on a much more sane level! Lynn

I got more info today - both from my brother's significant other (SO) who sent me a long email and from him when he called me. He completed the intake evaluation today and he goes in Monday for detox and then into treatment for four weeks. He seems very committed to it and I do think he realizes he will die soon if he doesn't do this. Hopefully it's not too late as his SO indicated he is pretty sick - unable to eat, etc. I was encouraged to hear him rather enthusiastic about his four hour conversation with the intake counselor who is a nine year recovering alcoholic. I know it will be important for him to develop relationships with other recovering alcoholics, which in the past he despised - things like AA meetings which he has attended in the past - required I think as a result of DUI arrests. He's anxious to get in and get started though scared about the detox. He knows he will be given medication to help with this but I felt very bad for him as I don't think I've ever heard him express fear about anything. So things are progressing. It's so tragic how awful addiction can be.

Luann - exactly what happened with Hitchcock. Things are only going to get worse in this global recession. Polly - my BIL grew up on Long Island, his family has $$$ (though sis is scared to ask how much they lost last year). I hosted her bridal (and her bridesmaids couldn't help financially) and her baby showers, so don't know what anyone there might have given since her MIL and SIL came to the showers here. I think her MIL had bridal shower there, and remember a baby shower that I didn't travel to, one of her friends went totally over the top with baby clothes (all designer) on a clothesline she kept pulling out of a basket. Her MIL was very nice and even sent me some RL clothes, blanket and a bear for my dd. Much different from here (my kids are 5 years apart, different genders, and much heartache and medical bills in between but my family says only the 1st kid gets a shower, and my cousins with girls won't even give me handmedowns b/c they're saving them for their 3rd, 4th kids). Spitfire - sounds like us - I have an MSEE but quit my job when dd was 1 yr old b/c she needed me (and my supervisor who was promoted while I was on mat. leave told me to choose - not a hard decision!). We have always helped our parents, helped siblings when we could (even went without Xmas gifts one year, asked my parents to send the $ they would have spent on us to DH's db when his teenage son died, we gave them everything we could spare for funeral expenses, plus some of my mom's siblings sent donations). It's harder now that we've got 1 income and DH's company has been in the news about going bankrupt, being bought out - all rumors, but the stock price is crazy and they had layoffs in Nov. B/c of our background (MIL grew up in Great Depression), we've always been frugal - short of houses, cars, and education, we don't borrow for anything and we try to get the lowest interest rate/shortest term possible. We paid cash for the last 2 cars, DH is still driving the oldest of the 3 (1996 model with 175,000 miles) but we felt we needed another 4WD and more reliable so bought Subaru in 2006. I'd love to have a plasma TV (we have a 27" TV now, bought new in 1999 to replace the one he bought in 1989 for the barracks - forgot about that since he took it to college with him, we got rid of my old 1986 wood cabinet TV in 1999 as well). But not high on our list of priorities - let's hope the new converter box works next month! My DB is asking for $ help after a divorce (his ex earns 6 figures, he's unemployed but has to pay her $800/mo in child support) and I just don't know if we can afford to help. Maybe if he could pay it back, but he never does and we've got a big credit card bill due in May (financed building materials, carpet, etc. on HD card 0% for 1 year). We already skipped buying each other presents this Xmas, and didn't spend as much on the rest of the family. Wish I hadn't bought that crystal in October but back then I thought economy had hit bottom - even bought some stock for my IRA and of course now it's just come back to half of what I bought it for. Didn't think that a month later DH's company would be laying off. Sorry, way off topic. I don't want to make anyone feel bad no matter what your circumstances.

Great photo! I love hummingbird moths! The host bushes I had for hummingbird moths died, so I'm looking to replace them. The fogging is ridiculous. It only kills mosquitoes in flight, and that's IF it reaches them. I know for a fact that the fog coming out of that truck only reached about 25' from the street into the yards, so the mosquitoes living in the back yards were fine. My evidence was that any host plant within 25' of the street would kill any caterpillars that hatched. Host plants in the back yard were fine. They also warned us to not have pets, children and the elderly out during the evening on the night they sprayed.

Hi again Wes, just come back from Holidays so I missed your reply though I went over to the USA Rose Forum and seen lots of replies you put on.. I was going to send you a internal email telling you I replied to your Topic but I forgot as I was busy packing.. Can I blame it on old age..

I understand what you mean by what you read in books it can be very misleading to us down under in OZ also. Some people are shocked when I tell them I dig up my Standards in the 36Â° C heat and transplant them elsewhere when they are not doing so well in a certain place, they say it should only be done in the Winter when they are dormant, no such thing as dormant here in the Sub-Tropics mind you Wes I give them lots of TLC for a few weeks making sure they get watered everyday for a while and I give them a shower of Seasol its liquid seaweed that usually helps..

Feel free to pop over any time for a visit, I am so glad you like our bearded dragons, I would love to see some of your delightful snow it can be very cooling on a hot Summer Day but then its still Spring here in Oz and the temp today only got to 31Â°C today so not hot at all..

I've read that roses are *native* only in the northern hemisphere, but some of the most fabulous roses were hybrized in Australia/New Zealand/etc using imported stock.
