Sterling??

Has anyone heard of a rose by this name?? I would love to start a collection of roses with names that mean something to me...Samantha for my daughter and my son is Sterling...my granmother's name was Beatrice and I'm sure I've seen that name around.....any suggestions would be appreciated....favourite catalogue companies etc...thanks, Tina

Tina, there's a rose called Sterling Silver. I don't know much about it, but enclosed is a link, so you can find something about it.
I believe it will be very hard for you to search for a rose that maybe has a name familiar or dear to you; I'd suggest you rather to go for those roses whose characteristics appeal to you, and you can name them as you wish; after all, they'll gonna grow in your garden and be your "babies". For example, I have a name for each of my roses -- it sounds crazy maybe, but it helps me relate better with them and I believe that roses also respond better.

Thanks for that Tom, and no I don't think it is crazy at all....the one rose I can remember from my grandmothers garden was Whiskey Mac so maybe it would be easier to do it your way and remember people in another way...Tina

Reed & Barton's Les Cinq Fleurs, patented 1900 4 dinner knives The one on the left was purchased separately from a different seller & has an acceptable blade. The 3 'bad' blades The worst blade has a chewed up cutting edge as well as severe pitting that would take something more aggressive than 0000 steel wool to fix; mostly, it lives at the bottom of the silver chest. The 2nd one still has one spot of deep corrosion but is much smoother than it used to be. The 3rd one doesn't look too bad but you can still feel some slight bumpiness to the surface where there is underlying light corrosion. No matter how bad they look now, they're a lot better than they were when I got them. These blades were heavily plated to begin with & I think the plate loss due to steel wool was minimal although the sheen is now more of a satin finish than before.

Seller is doing a bad/fraud deal. Fashion Jewelry classification can be cheap knock off and pot metal silver toned or colored, nickle/silver and sterling even gold plated sterling can be classified as Fashion Jewelry but it is not sterling if it is not marked STERLING Seller is in violation of EBay rules If it isn't .925 silver, it CANNOT be called STERLING in any way, shape or form. It is "silver tone" or "silver colored" NOT sterling. Sterling silver most always has the word sterling stamped into it somewhere but not always. Some hand wrought vintage pieces are not marked Sterling and Should never be bought online without a certificate of authenticity by the seller. Selling fashion jewelry as STERLING Silver is fraud. She misrepresented the item and you should ask for a full refund, report her to Ebay and if you paid thru Pay Pal refute the payment. Item misrepresented is a serious charge just make sure you have saved the pages and the description and every bit of info about the bracelet she posted and get pics of the item you received to show it is not as described. If she requests it back before she refunds send it signature required and/or tracked so you have proof she received it. People who lie about one thing will usually lie about another. Sterling is forever. It can't "wear out" unless it is silver plate. Yes, even a boxed dinner tastes better if one uses sterling! Perhaps it's a southern thing - after the Civil War, people had no money but they still had their silver and china and they used it daily. It is the epitome of "genteel poverty", a style I have mastered over the years! I had to - my husband was a secondary school teacher and there was no trust fund!

Sterling is supposed to be stamped 925. I wonder if they mean that it's 925/10 silver filled? Silver fill is sterling silver that is bonded to a base metal like copper or brass. It's not plated and is a stronger bond than plated that can take many years to wear through to the base metal. Silver fill is something that made it's appearance when the price of silver went sky high a few years ago. For years, sterling silver had been an less expensive alternative to gold, but when the price went so high, it was priced out of the reach of many jewelers and designers. Silver fill was a cheaper alternative to sterling, yet better quality than plated. This explanation of how something meets the standard of silver fill is taken from the Artbeads blog: In order for a product to be considered silver-filled, it must have at least 1/20 of its weight in silver. This equals out to 5% silver. So, when you read that a material is .925/20 or 925/20, this means the material meets the minimum standards for being silver-filled by containing 5% silver. 925/10 would mean that the product contains 10% sterling. If what you saw at Kohls is silver filled rather than 925 sterling silver, that is some really misleading advertising as most people aren't familiar with gold or silver fill unless they work in the jewelry industry in some capacity. Whether or not it violates your state's regulations for advertising precious metals, I don't know. If it's not silver filled jewelry, then I don't know what the heck they are talking about when they say it's 10% sterling.

Go for it Tina - this is great fun. I posted a question recently trying to find something to match the name of my best friend's new baby, and we had great responses and found one.

You might not find an exact name match, but there's lots of ways to find a link. One great suggestion I received was to find a rose named something relevant like The Children's Rose for your kids, Little Chap for a boy, or something to reflect their personality like Happy Child or Joyfulness.

You can even look up the meaning of people's names and see if that leads to something. For example, my name is Deb, which for reasons unknown actually means Bumble Bee (how did I get stuck with that?!) ... and yes, there is a rose called Busy Bee.

If nothing else, you will have a lovely afternoon (or three) exploring nurseries, web sites and books.
