Sport on Happy Days?

Well, the surprises keep coming... I went out this morning and looked at Happy Days which is blooming her heart out. I thought that Princess (who is also blooming) and is nearby, had somehow got one of her branches stuck in among the blooms, because there was a bright white bud in among all the pale pinks. But Princess is not actually next to Happy Days and Princess is not really a shockingly white rose!

A closer inspection revealed that this bright white bud was actually ON Happy Days.

It is a crisp white, just like an Iceberg rose, with the palest of pink flushes on the edges of one or two petals. The pink is just barely perceptible.

I looked at Happy Days' lineage on Help Me Find and there are a few white roses in her 'pedigree'. I don't know if this technically means that I DO have a sport or not, but the bloom is definitely very different to the others.

Of course the questions are as follows:

What, technically, constitutes a Sport when all is said and done?

If it IS a sport, do I leave it on the plant, or do I graft it and make a 'new' rose bush out of it for my garden if it turns out to be worthwhile and is a pretty rose when it is finally out? If so, at what time do I graft it?

In the big scheme of things, is it really all that important if I HAVE actually found a sport? It makes ME happy, but is it all that amazing, really?

Just as an update here: The rose is now in bloom. It is smaller than the other blooms (in circumference) but has many more petals. The white has faded to a beautiful cream colour, and the edges are all a pale, pale pink. I need new batteries for my digital camera! It is one of those roses that one looks at and could just EAT! LOL!

My day was filled with an annual sporting event that you'd think would be dads only... But every mom was there today. Where else would we be? I'm in the age group where my teen kids know I'm there for them, but are distancing themselves from me, as teenagers do. Today, every mom and dad I passed said "Happy Mother's Day!" as I did to them. I've never heard that phrase uttered so often. It's like we were in a special club that recognized one another, because we all know we are there for our kids, and it's just going to take a few more years before our kids fully appreciate it. My favorite story was from a mom who's son had just returned home from his freshman year away at college. Her parting words to me were, "Be patient. They'll appreciate you some day." Love my kids, and love being their mom. Warm wishes to those of you thinking of your moms, and Holly-Kay, condolences to your DH's parents.

My youngest had a lacrosse game. They won with an appropriate score of 2-14! He went out with the team to celebrate, and DH and I stopped for Mexican (and margaritas) on the way home. My plan was to celebrate with baked ziti and salad tonight, but the basketball team has made it to the state playoffs, and I know my son wants to go to the game, so I’m going to push the ziti to next week and give them their (small) gifts at some point today. DH gave me 100 stems of these lovely roses that look like ranunculus or peonies. The arragement doesnt look as wonky in real life. There are more on the kitchen table just beyond these and in the living room and family room! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sorry I haven't replied before this but I am having problems posting-hopefully I will get this through.
Sports are always interesting and some roses are known to sport over and over whilst others just fluke it once.
A sport is a genetic mutation and to propagate you do need to bud onto a rootstock.You can graft any time through the warmer months.
One thing to check for is whether this new bloom is actually a sport or if it is coming from a cane of the understock.This occurs frequently and is hard to detect unless you follow the cane down to see if it is coming from under the graft.
I hope you do have a sport-exciting for you if do. :)

Youngquinn, I think you may have some distance to travel with that knife and fork! LOL!

And Sandie, I forgot to mention the fact that it is not growing from beneath the understock. It is not a sucker. It is not growing from anywhere near the bud union, either.
