Native hibiscus: H. heterophyllus

This is Hibiscus heterophyllus 'Brick Red', although as you can see it's pink rather than red. (Perhaps the breeder was thinking of those pinkish-red bricks when naming it.) Anyway, this one *is* prickly. The plant shown is a cutting making its way thru the undergrowth of a crowded section of my garden, reaching up for the sun. (I now have my longed-for canopy!) Traditionally this species of hibiscus has flowered in yellow or white forms, but there's some interesting breeding happening in Qld that's yielding lovely pink and red blooms. There are also attempts to cross these prickly ones with the furry grey-leaved ones, so it's all very interesting and happening right here in our country.

Thank you for posting. I find it very interesting to see native flowers of other countries. Each hibiscus seems to have vastly different leaves. I have forgotten how many hibiscus varieties there are, but I know there are many.

I used to have an old Hibiscus in the back for donkey years but it finally fell over.As Inga said it had different leaves to your pictureso maybe it wasn't a native-about the same colour though. chas

Does anyone know of a source on the mainland, or a Hawai'ian source that can export to the mainland, for native Hawai'ian Hibiscus varieties? I can find a few for hibiscus arnottianus, but I'd also like to find h. waimeae, h. brackenridgei, and h. kokio. Anyone? From what I've read, h. brackenridgei is a fairly common landscaping plant in Hawai'i. I'm looking for plants or seeds. Thanks, Ethan

Susan, Sorry not to get back with you sooner...I was out of town. I think you nailed it with the H. dasycalyx! Not 100% sure, but if it's not, it's darn close! I've got lots of seeds, though! I had taken a couple of seed pods, then caught my 11 yo dd over there gathering handfuls of pods! LOL! She told me we had to have this hibiscus in our yard. Isn't that great?? I told her not to take too many-she'd strip it if I've let her! Now I've just got to clean them up. I also picked up some honeyball bush ball-things, but I'm not sure exactly what part are the seeds. Got any ideas? They almost look like dried up monarda heads, but smaller. And they come apart like gaillarda. I think that part is the seeds. But, I want to be sure. HW

Sorry, I've mixed up the cultivars. That photo is a different cultivar of the native hibiscus, 'Abbey's Tangerine', not 'Brick Red'. I'll post some more photos ... Except that I can only seem to post one photo per thread without using an external site. (Which I can't be bothered setting up.) So bear with me ...
