I have had the same ground cover roses (about 15 bushes) covering a strip in front of our house between the sidewalk and the street for 15 years. The area is about 4-5 feet wide and 60 feet long. I have always pruned them once a year with electric hedge clippers - it only takes about 20 minutes. They are thriving, and bloom all Spring & Summer, starting about now. You are in a completely different climate than we are, so I cannot comment on timing re transplanting, except that here we try to do that when the roses are as dormant as they are going to get (here some of them never go dormant). Of course, you will have to worry about frozen ground, etc. Re when to prune - I have discovered after two decades of experience that it really does not matter much when you prune, as long as you do not prune at all when the roses are just babies trying to get established (and in your climate probably not in the Fall when the new growth would get frozen). So, go for it! Don't forget to feed them. Jackie

"Scardan do you raise any ground cover roses? Will they keep spreading? How far does one bush reach?" I have about a dozen groundcovers, but many are still very young (1 year or even less). They are all either knirps or Gartnerfreude. The older ones cover about 1 square meter each, at least (= 10 square feet), it's more like 1.5mq (15 = sq feet). AT least. I consider 1 square meter each to have a fast complete cover. Some can cover also 2-3 square meters (20-30 sq feet) each if you are willing to wait one year or two. Growth is fast. These two sorts are very low, very healthy and very reblooming. Meilland has some good groundcovers that get higher (these stay under 1 feet, meilland has some reaching 2-3 feet and crawling on and on until they cover everything). BTW: I have also fairy and satina, but they look to me more like mini-roses than real groundcovers, they are more suited for small spots, were they do well.

I overwintered the roses in the garage. There have been light green shoots growing out of the plant, for about 2 months, even the soil. Is that a good sign? Can I prune them before putting them out in the spring?

Not sure it would help me, but perhaps it might help someone else with ID, if we could perhaps see some close-up shots of blooms, foliage, etc, Jackie? (I wouldn't mind seeing close-ups of the white one too, just out of interest - and in case they're related...) I always love seeing pictures and hearing about the history of your amazing garden!
