Gardening hurts!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well the day started well yesterday.....a load of sheep manure in the ute, the sun was shining so I got stuck into it. Not too long and I got hot so put on a sports top....mozzies around so got hubby to spray me...he said "why not just wear a bikini top?' ok...good idea I thought. Stick my hand in to grab a weed...bang!!OUch...look down and thought it was a prickle, go to pull it out and of course it was a bee sting 'after I squeezed it'..that was on the first knuckle, then I got a mozzie bite on the next knuckle on the same finger and at the end of the day I have the worst sunburn I think I have ever had!!!!!!!!!! I'm usually pretty careful and never expected to get burnt at all so now I stink really good of aloe vera and I can't bend my finger!! Oh well, such is life!! I will have a shirt on tomorrow and gloves as well...

wow you got mozzies already none here yet but then we don't get many. gotta watch these unusually hot spring days best not be out in it much after about 8 or maybe 9 am by my thinking, i'm starting to develop skin damage now from all those years of toughing it in the sun and i'm not known to sunburn just go very dark. did you hit the cold shower to take the heat out of the burn? my suggestion to all eaze into this seasons sun we have only just come out of winter.

Ohhh Tina that terrible, hope you are feeling better today.
Plenty of mozzies here have been for weeks,
Actually I dont think we are ever without them, funny that being so dry.

The only thing I've heard about is that ants will nurture aphids so they can eat their honeydew secretions. It's the aphids that do the damage to the plants.

Carl, Great resource for peppers and tomatoes thanks for sharing. Heck who wouldn't love a tomato called Box Car Willie! I'll join you and say I LOVE MY CSA and what a great year its having...but nowhere near as great as 10lb's of tomatoes!!! Hey, if you can bring your camera this week and take some photos of your CSA and share with us the ins and outs of how its run and I'll try and do the same and perhaps others will as well. I was wondering if the popular resurgence of Heirloom plants in many gardens throughout the country may be an aggravating factor in how wide spread the 19 fungal (bacterial and viral) out breaks are. Granted Heirlooms are wonderful and produce plants that grow fruits and veggies that actually have flavor, but growers for generations have worked hard to develop plants more resistant to fungal disease. The correlation of Heirlooms and Polio comes to mind, after vaccinating the population for generations we came close to eradicating the disease, and now due to a reasonably large numbers of parents choosing not to vaccinate we are seeing cases of Polio increase. Thank you both! Dawn, I have no doubt it probably is honey locust. I can't say for sure because we did a lot of cutting in the fall/winter on a visit from Maryland, then again in the spring before the trees got their leaves so all I ever really had to go on was the trunk and limbs. Ours didn't have compound thorns, just single thorns an inch long coming out on near opposite sides of the tree so that when layed on the ground you were almost guaranteed to get one through the shoe if you weren't looking. The biggest one we cut down was smaller than my wrist, so maybe they get the compound ones once they get bigger? I suspect the previous owners were cutting as they found them too. Either way, thorny trees are out! I haven't seen poison ivy here, but we wear gloves/boots/long pants anyway, just too much nature that fights back. I noticed a huge improvement to the soil once we mulched, the plants and earthworms are much happier. It only has about an inch of mulch so far, but we have a field full of brush to chip and put that down too. We didn't mulch last year, and even with almost daily water pulled our tomato plants out at the end of July (I didn't know then about how important mulch was, or about fall tomatoes). I spent about 3 months in late winter/early spring reading posts on here and our garden this year has already been much more productive. Everyone here has been a big help, thanks!

Many thanks to you all for your considered replies. You certainly caught the nub of my predicament. To date I have taken the course of "If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all" and have omitted commenting about parts or aspects of a garden that were not up to scratch. However, I feel that this really is less than honest and often feel unhappy with my own comments especially if the situation is that the person enjoys, or revels boastfully in, a good reputation without really deserving it. There are times when I feel like being perfectly honest, yes warts and all, but have always refrained. It is an awkward situation trying to be honest, give an accurate description of a garden, express disappointment if it really did not measure up to reputation or expectations and yet not hurt any feelings. There is a growing trend in Ireland for private gardens to open to the public. Many of these gardens are not, in my opinion, of a standard worthy of this and this especially grates when the garden owner charges for admission and then sells plants to visitors also. For many such people the garden has become a small home-based business and the goodwill, friendliness, plant swapping and free exchange of views and opinions that formerly marked gardening activities here is passing away. This is something I deeply resent as it runs contrary to my own views of gardening and my hoped for interaction between gardeners. The lowest form of this commercialism is when garden owners charge the members of their own gardening club for admission. Where is the hospitality and welcome that one expects from people who share a wonderful hobby? Gardening is a wonderful hobby shared by many wonderful people. For me it has been marked by friendship and generosity in pursuit of a common hobby and those who commercialise it cheaply put a bad taste in my mouth. By way of contrast, a Maryland gardener with whom I have corresponded over the past two to three years has come to Ireland for a holiday and visited yesterday bringing that most wonderful of books as a gift - Michael Dirr's book on woody plants. I completely sympathise! On the weekend I was out in the garden in dappled shade in a singlet most of the day, then when I got inside at night an looked in the mirror I had strap marks burnt into my back and huge welts on my anklets (I react badly to midgy bites, mosquiots seem fine though). I had the worst sleep trying to not scratch the bites. I hope next weekend goes better for you and your finger's gone down a bit.

Gloves gloves always gloves.It was drummed into me at an early age .'My hands aren't terrific but I can honestly say that I even avoided snake bite by wearing gloves.
Can help you with the mossies though I am like mossie smorgasboard and as long as I can leave the ones i can reach alone I seem to be fine.I just dab them with a bit of metho.

Normally I hate wearing gloves, ut when it came to pulling out the big weeds I did wear them. Mind you, I was as worried about what the dogs left!! But it was so much easier to get thw weeds up even if I needed the fork to help. But I can't work in the sun too long, but after carrying buckets of sheep manure and heavy mulch, gardening does hurt!!!

Nothing worse than stings or bites to make things uncomfortable gardening.I,m lucky in one way got bit by a wasp on the stomach, poor thing never recovered,on the other-hand when you suffer from problems from migraines,time is limited in the garden.Light gear sun glasses hat gloves soft shoes for me,never get hot thats when I get into trouble,of to gaga land,good gardening everyone,Tina and Lauren hope the bites are better now,Greencroc.

Well I have given up on the gloves bit, every morning now I am out inspecting the roses and pulling off and disposing all the leaves that look as though they have got black spot, so I bought myself a new pair of gloves yesterday a ladies pair this time for a better fit with little round raised bumps on them but still came away with masses of scratches just now, perhaps I should try rubber gloves instead. Having been bit and stung by just about every known insect in Qld ( not snakes)I can understand how you all feel.

Greencroc so sorry to hear you suffer from migraines that would be terrible and if that isn't bad enough to be restricted with your time in the garden as well, so sad.... I could not image it so that makes me a very lucky person, So here's hoping the little time you spend out in your garden is the best time of the day...Cheers...MM.

The good thing is MM,everything is set up easily,perennials,greenhouse,gardens mainly tropical for animals birds so everthing is mulched well twenty minutes here and there is luckily all it takes to maintain.My father is here he hoses three times a week.Greenhouse is full of foliage anthuriums and alocasias,plus a few ferns all well established.Yes I really have some great times in each section,never seen so many skinks having so much fun amongst native violets and gazania,allthe best,greencroc.

I hate wearing gloves too but I found some riggers gloves which are a little big for my small hands but not too bad. They're better than any garden gloves I've tried and only about $5 from hardware shops.

You should see my lower arms from the wrist to the elbow!!
From scratches from roses mainly.a bit of dermatitus as well.
My arms are so red and angry looking its unbelievable.
A few months ago I bought some arm shields from Treloars.
These should be really good.
Also I go out to the garden a lot unexpectedly and often forget the gloves.....bad move!
