My very first Hollyhock

20 years ago

I am surprised that I finally got a flower from this plant having planted the seeds last december.

Somehow they managed to survive all the caterpillar attacks then the Lantana bug got stuck into them.

So this Hollyhock is a real survivor:

The dolphins at Sea World:..... Making good use of my Yearly Pass, I went again yesterday.

I wonder how often a bird in flight gets hit by a dolphin.

The Anemones are still flowering, must be the rain that has bought them back to life.

congratulations!!!!! terrific photos again, wonderfully clear, I just called hubby over to look at the dolphins and bird and even he commented on how good the photos are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that is something! Anyway, I am awaiting the emergence of my first ever hoolyhock as well, I just hope it is as nice as yours....Tina

The Dalmation series of Digitalis purpurea blooms in about 14 weeks from seed. Last year I used Dalmation Peach, which was beautiful. This year I'm growing Dalmation white with red spots. Dwarf Hollyhock series Queeny blooms the first year from seed and comes in several separate colors. I've grown the white and yellow; this year I'm using salmon. I should add that I don't wintersow either of these, but the Dalmation Digitalis is marketed as 100% first year flowering and it seems to be true, so you should get late first year blooms regardless. Heck, as long as he can afford it, why not? I was talking to my ex-boss, now one of the regional Senior Execs (used to be called Office Managing Partners when I was there), and he told me he was so dissatisfied with the service he was getting since US Trust was taken over by BofA, he had pulled $500K out from his portfolio (fortunately before the market took a dive) and it was now just sitting in his savings account. LOL! He's a car addict, too, and also drives every exotic auto you can think of in a local car club. But personally he's faithful to his 9-yr old Porsche 911, which he bought for his 40th birthday and has loved ever since. His wife, a more sensible woman who has to drive the kids around to and from school, prefers the Acura MDX. OTOH, I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't succumb to the McMansion craze, and are still living in the same modest three bedroom house they were twenty years ago. If I was in TGG's place, I'd definitely prefer buying the Bentley to a Porsche. At the very least, it carries four people a lot more comfortably, hehehe.

I was trying to figure out why my three-month old hollyhocks were so massive. They are already 2 1/2 feet high and very bushy, with leaves sprawling everywhere and so dense that they are shading the lower leaves. I've got the world's most horrible soil -- 65% heavy clay (drains fine though due to the rest being sand) -- and I'd amended the bed with a natural compost before planting it, but otherwise, no fertilizer added. Water it lightly every two days. I'd offer a photo but it's dark, but I just wanted to share that they were so massive that I was a bit concerned! Especially since the leaves were so heavy already that I wound up staking them with sticks all around. So apparently they like really heavy clay. They only get 3-4 hours of mid-noon sun and that's it. But they look like Jurassic Park. This is some odd soil. Everything grows incredibly large that I plant in it. I think it most be very nitrogen rich, perhaps. But I still couldn't square the hollyhocks I've seen in photos with the ones I have growing. Quite sure they'll get awful rust though in winter and I'll have to put some other flower in front of them. Eager to see them bloom next year. They are black and a nice sized bed of them with 15 or so plants. Likely I'll have to thin them to fewer.

Good on the Hollyhock, clap , clap.it must be a toughie.
The Dolphin picture is wonderful, I love the way the water drops sparkle, the bird sure has a story to tell.

All fantastic, the daylily is a really crisp clear yellow. I love daylilies that are one colour. Some of the eyed ones can be a bit garish.
I love seaworld too, the dolphin photo is fantastic. Seals and dolphins are wonderful, I always feel sorry for the polar bears though.

For some reason the hollyhock photo didn't show up so I'll check back later.

The other photos are great, such stunning, clear colours in the flowers and the dolphins are beautiful. Is that what you would call a birds eye view?

Lovely pics. MM it must be good to be that close to the dolphins, I love your day lily, & the others are very nice too, some of my Holly Hocks from last year are in bud again, I also have two from last year like yours they didn't grow well but they have growth & buds as well, I'm sure it is all the lovely rain we are all getting
