I bet he was only "playing possum"! I bet he just waited for you guys to work away, feeling all smug. Then he probably sniggered, shook his head and hopped away.
When I was a kid, we used to get heaps and heaps of them and my dad and brother in law would get out and practise with their four-woods (golf sticks with big heavy wooden heads) and practise their swing. There would be bodies littering the road when they went to bed but do you know what? in the morning, as sure as sunrise, there would be very, very few left!
My husband gets the garden fork and spears into the ground, then leaves it there for a few days...just to be sure. He's gruesome.

Yes, definately playing possum.
We always say after the shovel or hoe hits, "Head to the right, body to the left " and then off to the fire. The way we keep finding them after all we dispose of I think that even then they join up and live another day.!!!!!!

And the big truck came this afternoon and took it away, if it does live to see another day.

Oh just seeing that makes me quiver. I got ambushed by one when I drove into the garage one evening it must have hopped in when the door went up. Then it was sitting right next to where I have to get out. I was stuck in the car for about 10 mins until hubby drove in from work. The stupid thing had not even moved when I hit the panic alarm on the car keys. Hubby had to laugh at the children and I held hostage in the car by a toad. I simply freeze up with terror at the site of them.

As the saying goes (well nearly, a bit of poetic license, just swapped snake for toad) 'the only good toad is a dead one'

They do seem to have excellent powers of rejuvenation - should find out the secret.

My son has learnt not to use a sledgehammer to kill toads. One hit and toad splattered all over him - needed a shower badly. Luckily it was blood and guts not poison.

Six hours after having my last baby (I came home 4hrs after she was born) and at 3am I was chasing a toad in my bedroom with hubby sound asleep. His nights efforts (?) had tired him out while I was wide awake. Anyway, eventually used the broom to steer toad through the house and out the door.

I could think of better things to do after coming home from hospital GH.
But the thought of one of those things in the house let alone near a new baby
Is just too much, but a a girl go to do what a girls got to do so Good on you..MM.

My God that toad is UGLY! I remember when they were first found in Qld, someone used to freeze them, empty them and stuff them into shapes. We had a surfertoad and a policetoad. That is the only place I want to see them. One good thing about being in Victoria!! BTW Pretty rose!!

They do have a rejuvinating gene, I'm sure of it. I used to put them in a bag and freeze them, but my husband started to object.

A beautiful rose MM I have this one new this year not flowering yet, I have never seen a cane toad but from what I have heard I'm lucky being a frog lover it is hard to imagine that nature gave us this grewsom beast
