It's a new one for me , it looks like the markings of a hippeastrum and the form of a sprekelia, could it be a bigeneric hybrid of the two? When I googled papilo it came up with the gladiolus genus but there is a sprekelia papilo.

I think it's Hippeastrum papilio - see link below. Would I be right, Margaret, in thinking that the apparently much longer lower petals are the result of you taking the pic with a wide angle lens? Or are they really that much longer?

Wasn't it Sheila(?) from WA who showed us beautiful photos of this species a year or two back?

Tony thanks for the link, that sure looks like it's the one.
I did zoom in a little to get a closer up view but I have not got a digital camera. Actually the outer edge of petals are greener than in my photo where they look nearly white. Has now got two flower heads so I have taken another shot a few days ago and will post in again soon.

Yes Tony is correct, it is the species Hippeastrum papilio.

It is really beautiful.
