Colouration of roses

Hi All

One of the things that puzzles me is how to tell the true colour of a rose species. For instance, when we were at Swanes in Sydney I fell in love with Betty Boop. This is surprising as I usually go for HT medium-sized flowers with high pointed buds and perfume whilst BB is a semi-double FB with little fragrance. When I went to MGR I didn't even recognise her.

How do you know which is truer to the species? I prefer the Swanes colouration so purchased mine from there.

I have also noticed that the photos on the tags of roses often do not resemble what I expect the roses to look like. My {{gwi:2113850}}has a tight pink bud on the tag, not the more defining open flower.

People who buy without research must be surprised with what they get. If it comes to that, I wonder how many surprises I'll get with my 23 :)

Hi Jackie,
I have to agree with you. That does not look like the same rose at all! I know I've had this problem on labels too (and not just on roses). You'd think with technology these days they could get it right! I'm interested to hear what the rose experts here have to say on the matter.

Hi Jackie I agree I also bought 19 roses from MGR last month and I only buy standards but this Alexander just stood out like a bright light a real traffic stopper so to speak, but they did not have it in a standard only a Bush rose so I bought it anyway as I thought it will look really good at the front of my block where it could be seen as you drove in the gate.

This is a Pic of Alexander yet the one I seen growing looked nothing like that it had lots more red in it, this one looks the same as the labels the two Westerland climbers had on them.

I also bought 3 Lavender Dreams they were a soft lilac/lavender colour this Pic does not
look anything like it, its pink not lavender I would not have bought this from the website.

So I think that the ink they are using to produce these Pics are not true to life, and I hope mine look more like the labels this time but I was lucky as every rose I bought I seen it full blown and in bud so I bought what I seen not from labels or a website. Cheers...MM

If there is no registered hybrid called Irene's flame it is for all intents and purposes a NOID. Not that matters all that much because all it means is that you cannot get an award from organisations such as the AOS. This and several similar posts recently remind me of Cymbidium Barry Swain. This is an id that a lady put on all the noid Cymbidiums she purchased from a guy called Barry Swain. Of course she proceeded to sell said Cymbidiums on an orchid society sales table, till one day i asked her "How come you have all these Cymbidiums called Barry Swain?

Floribunda Easy Does It fits that bill here. Bi- or tri-colored, it's a blend of saturated orange, raspberry & lemon sherbert hues that opens brightly intense & mellows beautifully. Prolific with dozens of buds swelling & blooms opening simultaneously, consider it truly continuous from early to late. Solid fruity perfume of 6 on a scale of 10 to me, it's a bushy 3'x3' without pruning & fully clothed in glossy dark green leaves (unmarred by disease in this humid no spray central Virginia garden). It looks like a child's drawing of a rose bush with its globe shape studded all over with colorful buds & blossoms. It's the most cheerful rose I know. Hi Bart: I no longer post in forum since Feb 1, 2017. I was checking Organic Rose for pics. of Khalid's fabulous roses, and saw your question. I won't be in for a long discussion, but I copy-paste the info. which I gave in the past regarding the same question. If you click on my profile-picture, I listed all the links pertaining to most subjects, which I will include your question in that "database", listed in my Houzz-profile. Thank you for asking that question, which people often asked me in the past. Here's the info. I posted in September 4, 2016: "When Khalid asked me a question about shifting roses to the blue zone. I did some research and found that high-phosphorus shifts roses to the red-zone, but high-potassium shifts roses to the blue-zone. I tried UP the sulfate of potash NPK 0-0-50 Stephen Big purple, and yes, Stephen became bluish-purple, rather than raspberry-red. The link also stated that UP the phosphorus will DOWN the potassium. Thus if phosphorus is given, MORE potassium is needed, since phosphorus and potassium compete for the same absorption site in plants. My best year for pots is with blood meal NPK 12-0-0, much higher in nitrogen than Milorganite NPK of 5-2-0. U. of Kentucky experiment with green house plants, using Peter's Soluble 20-10-20 came 1st, with Organic Omega 6-6-6 came in close second .. strictly based on the weight of flowers & plants. But when I look at the pics. of their marigolds, Omega 6-6-6 look healthier & better-looking blooms. Organic Omega 6-6-6 is blood meal, bone meal, and sulfate of potash. Since roses need only 1/10 of phosphorus compared to nitrogen and potassium, I simply used blood meal and sulfate of potash, plus gypsum (for calcium) for my pots last year, resulting in the healthiest growth, even after the snow hit. Zero blackspots, zero mildew even with the cheap Sta-green potting soil that killed most of my rootings." StrawChicago.

monarda, I'd say there were an awful lot of extravagant rose names from that era to which no rose could live up... I guess 'Antinous' was supposed to convey the impression that the rose would live forever- that worked out fine, huh? Well, it turns out that there were two HP's named 'James Watt', and I just added an HMF record for the earlier rose... the link above incorrectly goes to the only record HMF had at the time, but I later realized the date was wrong. I wish I were one of those people who could just pop plants in the ground and not worry about their colour, but I'm not. I've lost count of the apricot and orange roses I've bought over the years which have turned out to be pink.
I think one problem could be that some roses change a great deal throughout the season. I have a yellow rose which was sent to me as Red Ena Harkess, which it obviously isn't. In spring it has deep orange buds opening to large egg yolk yellow blooms. By mid summer the flowers are much smaller and, depending on the weather, can be pale or dark pink. By autumn it is pale yellow with pink edges, by which time it resembles "Peace". If I wanted to take a photo of it to show someone, it would be difficult to know when would be the best time.
It would be good if some labels were just a bit more descriptive, but then if they were, we wouldn't buy so many roses to replace those which were the wrong colour.
