Hi Cath, it's entirely possible, though I've not read of it. I do know Judge Henry Fonda, who lived in Mar Vista by Santa Monica and operated a small nursery at his home for several years, unsuccessfully tried Cl. Mlle. Cecile Brunner for standards. Nothing took for him and he theorized it was due to "genetic incompatability". I know Ralph Moore brought in the rose known as Moore's South African OGR with the intention of trying it as a stock, but it didn't work, either. He stated the wood was too hard and the bark refused to "slip", lift easily enough for buds to be inserted. I have no information whether he tried the chip budding technique Burling uses or not. With as many thousands who have played with roses over just the past century alone, I'm sure someone may have had your idea, I just don't have knowledge of or information about whether it has been tried nor whether it worked or not. I do know many things have been tried. A friend received Austins from Hortico back in the eighties and nineties whose suckers were definitely Bride's Dream, which Hortico flatly refused, but that's what grew from the suckers on those roses. I've tried quite a few things myself, including Cardinal Hume (which works splendidly), and Festival Pink, my solid pink sport of Festival Fanfare, the striped sport of Fred Loads. That one worked pretty well and developed very thick, nearly self supporting trunks, but sun burned very badly in my climate which made it less than suitable. I had previously found this in the 1920 ARS annual about someone in Florida budding Druschki on Mme. Plantier, though it's been theorized by others what was meant was probably Odorata or Fortuniana. Who can say for sure? If you have the rose in question and want to try it, the information would be quite interesting to report back to us here on the forum. Who knows? kate, I have climbing iceberg, burgundy icebery, and brilliant pink iceberg. I have had all of them for four years now. My white and pink are on huey rootstock, but my burgundy is on fortuniana rootstock. The pink and burgundy is planted next to each other. Frankly, though,I don't think I left enough room for them to grow and I don't prune them hard, so they have overgrown each other. And, as Jeri said, the BPI does sport back to white every so often. Not many of my flowers have done that, just the occasional rose in a cluster, so it really doesn't stand out (unless, like me, you are obsessed with every bloom and can always spot anything out of the norm, lol) IMHO, if you like your white and burgundy, you will love BPI! Here is my burgundy...(sorry the first two pics are a little blurry ((must have been early morning, lol)) and here is my pink... And a couple of them together...the blooms are starting to fade, as well as get a little crispy from the heat we are having, but I think you can still get the effect... Burgandy Iceberg was a sport of Brilliant Pink Iceberg which was a sport of Pink Iceberg which was a sport of Iceberg. It's not uncommon for these sports to revert to the color of the plant it came from and with so many in it's background that could be pink or white. I say enjoy the color contrast. White goes with most everything. Many people pay extra for two varieties with contrasting colors budded onto the same rootstock. You got yours at no extra cost.

I'm still waiting for its next blooms - it's a baby band that is shooting up as fast as a climber-- I think it's too busy growing right now. It's got 3 brand new basals that are close to 3' tall now....Anna has such a romantic shape, and each time I see your beautiful Anna I start dreaming of having an entire bushful of these blooms!!! I almost wish Yves Piaget had this exact Anna de Diesbach shape. But Yves Piaget, the one you recommended, has far better rebloom they say than either Anna d. D. or Louise Odier....
