Burgundy Iceberg background planting?

OK folks - I need help - this is bugging me.

I planted 4 burgundy icebergs, on impulse, for a bit of colour a couple of years ago. I really am not fond of them, but I can see their landscaping value, as they give lots of colour for a long time, and look good from a distance. I was going to give them away, but then i got another as a freeby from treloars, and though I could dig them all up and move them to a spot where they will serve simply as landscaping. What I want is a backdrop of an old fashioned rose with nice leafy foliage, as the BI's are sparse in that department. It doesn't have to be a repeat bloomer, or though that would be an advantage. I would be quite happy with a lovely flush of Spring bloom.

Behind that will go some philadelphus and behind that there are established buddleias (I planted these) and pittosporums (were there when we came here).

Have just finished reading one of Susan Irivines books, and thought maybe "Raubritter" - but I think I may have somewhere else I want those. Also thought maybe Rosendorf Sparrieshoop. I like the idea of the pink and burgundy. In front will go lavender, and maybe some iris if i can fit them in. The soil is a bit on the heavy clay side.

The site faces N/W with a little protection from the carport, and on the other side of this curving path I have planted a row of Bonica, backed by a pink buddleia, and fronted by bearded irises.

Please give me some ideas. I am wanting to finish this planting this week :-)

What about Dutchess De Brabant - she is one of the shortest teas - to about 1.5 and has an abundance of lovely foliage and is a real flower machine.
If you want a taller bush Mrs B R Cant has the best foliage with double blooms of pink - yum. These tea roses will have leaf all year round (well they do in Perth).
A modern rose with a colour that would really complement the burgundy is Escapade . Her blend of pink-mauve would look great. Pretty well foliaged - but not as good as the Dutchess.
Other oldies to consider - Madam Isaac Periere which is
a big growing bourbon with pink/purple blooms which are really fragrant. You would not need too many of these to fill up the space (I have mine growing up a pole)
For a true purple what about Reine De Violette - she has lovely blue-grey-green foliage and the loveliest double purplish flowers. She is a naturally upright grower. This would be rather unusual as this colour with the burgundy would look rather 'moody' - which could be picked up with the lavender - quite a contrast to what we usually grow in the garden. Other things that would look good with it are the black-purple irises or an edging of black mondo or even better the black/purple pennisetums (sterile).

Thanks Deryn - R d V was unavailable from Misty Downs, and Judy suggested Orpheline de Juillet (sp?) which I had considered. Actually I had considered Nuits de Young, but she said it would be too short. I think she only has 2 of O de J left - might take them and fill the gaps with poppies until next year.
I am not fond of Mondo grass, but your suggestions gave me the idea to put purple sage along the front of the bed. Have heaps of bearded irises to choose from, and will pick a few different varieties for length of bloom period, from the dark ones - Dusky Challanger, Titan's Glory, and the likes.

Sorry, Carla, I didn't see your post until now. None of my roses have blackspot so I don't know how it would do for you. It did wonderfully well in the heat of summer although the color of the roses was lighter. I haven't even fertilized this rose but I will use alfalfa meal on it next spring. Ingrid

Thank you, I hoped you'd like this bloom and pic. This has to be one of the best blooms yet on this rose. The edges are a little cruddy but the bloom is perfect to me:) Judy, I'm looking forward to seeing your pics of it, I love seeing the roses in different areas of the country and how they perform and grow for others. Jean, I wanted Ebb Tide, I don't think I'd get a real purple out of that one either. Too hot here, I don't enough of the right cool weeks or months even. This is a great repeat bloomer and always has a few on. It does not shatter like Iceberg in the heat, but the roses don't last long. That's ok 'cause there are always more. I cut and bring in a few and they do well in a vase. Thanks for the complements on my roses:) Kate, I got Rainforest as a band 9/16/06 and BI in a gal pot in April. I planted it where I thought it would get plenty of sun and it was already warm then. It didn't get enough and after a month I had to transplant it when it was just starting to hit high 80's and low 90's to where it is now. I had to create false shade for late afternoon sun for the next month while it established itself. Temps bounced in the 90's pretty quickly. It sulked all of May and must have been growing roots underground. June it started actively growing again and in July it started budding out for the first time and blooming and here's a pic of the bush. You can see the old leaves in the middle of the bush in the pic. July 10 at 103o: Nov 3rd at 72o: I don't have spring info sorry, I will this next year. This bloomed very well in Aug even when we had 110o for 3 weeks, it bloomed well all through Sept and here you see a pic for Nov. Yes, I am pleased with this, though initially I was disappointed at the color of the blooms. I believe that this will be as large as my Icebergs eventually, I don't think this bush is done growing, just the year is ending. Some part of this is usually in bloom. BI also has a very pleasant fragrance as an added bonus. I call myself central CA, I'm between Fresno and Bakersfield, BTW:) I hope these additional pics help you out. After the rain the bush has darker burgundy colors from the cooler weather. I just meant by that remark earlier that my roses don't know it's time to stop budding and blooming. Both these bushes bloomed well all summer even in the heat. Leslie

I absolutely heartily recommend both Bonica and Hope for Humanity in our zones. Both are cane hardy and absolute troopers in bloom. In fact, Bonica is among my top 10 roses of my 800+, and it doesn't even have particularly lovely individual blooms. It has extensive and all-summer blooms, though, and it's hardy, healthy, and bullet-proof. Hope for Humanity is from the Explorer breeders, and it's perfectly happy in the zone 4 portion of my yard. It doesn't rebloom quite as often, but it doesn't get as much sun either. The deep red blooms are very appealing, and it's also trouble free. I haven't grown America, so I'll let someone else comment on that one. I do have Melody Parfume and it's at least root hardy for me, but not a very frequent bloomer and it probably does get some BS. Burgundy Iceberg is very not winter hardy for me, so I wouldn't recommend that one. Cynthia

Jan it sounds great - I love irises but they don't do as well here as they do in colder areas.
You'll have to name the new area the 'moody blues bed' - I'm feeling envious just thinking about it
