iceberg hedge with lavender

Has anyone out there planted a hedge of french lavender with a hedge of iceberg roses behind, I want to plant this on a slope behind our swimming pool as a back drop on the three foot retaining wall. I thought the lavender would mask the stems of the roses and the colours of purple and white would be lovely Now I am not sure.. Please any suggesstions.

My neighbor who lives across the street of me planted white standard iceberg roses with a hedge of french lavenders in the front yard. It matches perfectly with the white picket fences. They use blue stone /bricks to hedge the garden bed.

It creates this really nice comforty, cottage feeling. My neighbor sticks to the white, green, blue, and silver color scheme. Almost a white garden....They grew this climbing SOLANUM JASMINOIDES - that produces floriferous white flowers throughout the season, along the front porch.

Points to consider: What color is this retaining wall? and would you intend to plant other flowers beside these roses and lavenders? I'm pretty sure that bright red and yellow colours would destroy this cottage feeling if blended together with those lavenders and white roses.

I've always see my neighbor pruning their roses and lavenders deeply...so if you're after a low maintenence planting scheme - I don't think it's a right choice. The roses would loose their leaves in winter etc. In my honest opinion - that kind of planting look nice in the front yard along the white picket fence - prove me wrong.

Have you consider a row of camilleas? Or maybe a hedge of dawf size apple trees....or maybe a hedge of star jasmine?

I think your Iceburg roses is a doable idea and would look quite nice. You have barely enough room , but just enough in regards to the width. ( in the photo below the planter is about 20 inches wide ) I live in Northern California and find that I need to routinely apply a systemic fungicide once every 4 weeks [April thru Sept] to battle black spot. I use Bayer 3 in 1 fertilizer/ pesticide/ fungicide ( comes in a granular form in a blue bottle ) This keeps the roses almost black spot free and blooming until Christmas day. From California Gardening I have never had any luck with training a bougainvillea to cascade downward. Their woody stems want to grow upward . In my experience I would say that you will have a challenge in maintaining a cascading / prostrate bougainvillea. I do ADORE bougainvilleas though !! I find them relatively low maintenance in comparison to other vines, especially roses. They require little to no water once established and bloom their hearts out from May to the first few hard frosts . They are thorny, but I only need to prune mine once a year - after the winter season to cull out any dead wood, and then sporadically during the growing season to keep a wayward branch in bounds.

water right before sunrise. shear the lavenders into globes, taking care not to cut back to dead wood. Take off 1-2". azaleas have small, shallow root systems, so lightly but frequently is the best way to water. They do not like to dry out. You could try some fertilizer, but lightly. Those small, shallow root systems are sensitive. . Iceberg I do 3x / week mid spring to the beginning of December. 90'sF every other day, 100sF every day. Normal winters I shut off my irrigation. This year 2x per week, just enough. Probably will step it up to 3x in a couple of weeks. A gallon or two at a time is good depending on the size of the plants. Adjust by observing the plants. Do they look good? Are they holding on to their foliage? Are they reblooming well? Mulch will hold in moisture, keep the soil cooler (rose roots like cool soil) and break down into nutrients that enrich the soil. Keep mulch away from the base of the rose by 3"-6"

This is my best Blue Bajou flower so far - I'm actually not sure that it's a bluer shade of lavender than Blue Moon or Bering Renaissance. I seem to recall one member here saying that it needs the cooler autumn temperatures (or perhaps the slightly more acidic and wet autumn soil) to appear bluish. Or perhaps the more bluish pictures I've seen of it are simply a matter of it being photographed under more shaded lighting conditions. But for a rose that doesn't carry the gene for the blue plant pigment delphinidin (only the genetically engineered rose Applause does this, I believe), Blue Bajou still looks too blue to be filed under pink, IMO.

Before anyone can help you with your question we need to know where in the world you are located. I’m guessing that perhaps you’re in the UK? If so you can’t use any Lavandula stoechas cultivars. They’re not hardy here. Other than that pretty much any one can be clipped into a hedge. You need to do some research and find one you like the look of. Do you want greyer or greener leaves? Dwarf or a bit higher?
