Butchart Gardens

I recently visited Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island in Canada. Here is a little bit of the history.

Robert Butchart was the pioneer of manufacturing portland cement in Canada. In 1904 with his wife Jennie and 2 daughters settled at Tod Inlet 13 miles north of Victoria on Vancouver Island. There was a sizable deposit of limestone and the first cement was shipped in 1905. In 1909 the unsightly pit remained and that was the insiration for Jennie to create her sunken garden.

If you want more info type "Butchart Gardens" into your search and there are about 375,000 hits, much of it on the history, really worth a look. It could very well keep you occupied for hours.

I will post a few pics of the gardens over the next week or so for all to enjoy. PLEASE respect copywrite on these photos.

Doug.
