Ponytails

I have a large ponytail that has got really too tall for where I want it.

Can I cut the top off?

Will it sprout again like a yucca?

Annie I read somewhere?? That if you cut the top off they will produce shoots, maybe more than one though, so that would be different.

Well, that's what I'm hoping will happen.
But I don't want to do it if all I accomplish is to kill the thing.
I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone had done it.

I think Jen hit the nail on the head! No pun intended! LoL I'm 43 and I live in ponytails during the winter. My hair gets SOOOO full of static that I can't bear to wear it down around my face! Back of the neck works for me. My scalp hurts if I wear a ponytail to high on my head.(and I think at my age it would be a bad thing.... like me in a mini skirt now, or god forbid, low rider jeans!!)(muffin top would be putting it very nicely lol) "Muffin top", for those not in the know, is what hangs over low rider jeans....(looks like the top part of a muffin!) kinda like "whale tail", which is the T shape of G-strings that stick out of the back of low rider jeans! Fabulous now that we can see Cher in all her glory! Oh my, Maria, you took the leaf of faith, Cher looks great! I bet with the trim and repot, her elegant ballerina like figure (caudex ) will plump up a bit. She looks very elegant with her long slender look! I love that we can now see her in full :) You must be so happy to have accomplished this! I found the same with Harry when I repotted him, most roots where on the outside. Having only chopped Harry's heads off once... Here was my thinking: Cut them off in fall, allow him to sit in a low light area and water once a month at most. Let him gather strength for spring. Come March he had new sprouts starting. At first they were little bumps, then fully fledged sprouts and then by summer, he was on his way to his new stout look. I think late fall may be best as you will want to stop watering her due to her having no leaves, plus this will give her time to re-establish her roots between now and then. Harry did fine with watering him once a month in winter. I only started watering him once a few of his sprouts were about an inch long and green. If you look at the photo above of him with his heads cut off and the one before it, you will notice that his caudex is plump in the one with his heads and then it is more wrinkly in the one with the new sprouts. We do this same routine each winter. He looks dehydrated early spring from the lack of water in the winter but by spring he's re-hydrated and plumped up. Have you thought about how much you want to cut off? I look forward to the next update on Cher!

Kate - I think it's the right choice to leave the brown ends and roots until spring. Just discard the completely dry leaves to keep the plant tidy and let the drying ones take care of themselves. It's riskier to repot now and while the palm isn't in optimal health there doesn't seem any danger of it dying. Lots of time left in winter to research root pruning, getting the right tools, and maybe even considering a better mix. In spring you will probably need sturdy chopsticks (I like metal ones), pruners (sharp, double bladed kind), hose sprayer, and a helping hand to do the job. There is a great deal of helpful threads in the Houzz/Gardenweb Container Forum about this topic. Lots of people in this forum frequent that one too and are very experienced growers. =)

g'day annie,

yes pony tails are like succulants, where you cut the top off it will throw a couple shoots maybe 3 so will have a branched effect. stick the other but trimmed of foliage bit into a pot or the ground and it will grow. you don't say if the plant is in a pot? but if it is the ground and you don't want to cut the top off just remove all foliage and dig it out of the ground you won't neeed much of a root ball, and pop it into the new location.

no,Len. It's in a pot and it's nearly reached the roof.
I like it there and that's why I was hoping that I could just lop it.

Had a bit of a giggle when I saw your Pony tail heading ,Annie.
The other day on the news we heard about a new theft going on. Someone is cutting off horse and pony tails, guess they have found a sail for the hair.
Can you imagine all those horses not being able to flick flies. ????

Oh Marion, that's disgusting! I really wonder what this world is coming to sometimes.

Annie, a friend's husband backed into their 5 foot high ponytail a couple of years ago, and snapped it off only a couple of inches from the bottom. It is now looking wonderful. Chop with confidence.
