It has probably got a virus. Sometimes a virus is very hard to get rid of and the best thing is to ditch it. Failing that put it in a different spot where it will not contaminate any others that are growing.
To post photos here first of all join up with a site called www.photobucket.com It is a free site and very easy to take photos from your computer to photobucket. It will show you what to do, step by step. When that is done, open your Gardenweb page and use the heading a "Post a message" at the top of page. You now have both pages in front of you, Now on Photobucket just highlight the third line that will appear under the photo the HTML line and copy and paste it to the Gardenweb page. Alternatively, even easier is to go to the "Oz Garden Gallery" Go to "Post a Message" Type in the information you want to give, fill in the top bit too, then you will see under neath a line which says- Preview Message when it goes to Preview, there is another line underneath which says "Image File to Upload - there you browse through the pictures you have on your computer, highlight the one you wish to upload and click. But a few have suffered. Some are coming back, that is producing normal growth and others not so.

Sounds to me like the soil they are growing in might be a bit too acidic. Do a ph test and/or spade in some dolamite, that'll safely raise the ph a little and should cure the yellowing between the leaf veins, can't do any harm. Maybe also give them a good feed, chook manure, blood and bone; I do that each spring, or winter at pruning time. As for funguses I spray occasionally with Tryphorine - keeps blackspot at bay - mixed with a systemic insecticide to take care of aphids, etc, with a touch of detergent so it clings to the leaves. If you don't like using them I suggest you give up rose growing, especially if you garden in a humid climate, as I do.

I think your soil is the problem: the yellowing suggests the soil is a little acidic, roses generally like a neutral ph - around 7 - to a shade alcaline in comparison to, say, natives. I'd try a dose of dolimite lime, about a handfull around each plant. If that doesn't solve the problem try 'Trace Elements', available in package form from nurseries and Big W and Bunnings garden sections.

Another possible reason is that the soil has had glyphosate (Roundup) sprayed onto it recently. If this is the case, it will work its way out of the soil soon and new growth after pruning should be okay.

Does Australia have RRD? I had that type of growth caused by RRD. Not sure if it has made its way down there.

If it is a virus starting at the top of the plant you want to cut the tortuous growth out right away so it does not spread all the way down and up to the rest of the plant.

Could be herbicide damage too.

Hi Kaibeau. If you still have the rose with the problem - sounds like nutrient and/or macronutrient deficiencies. Yellowing leaves and green veins in young leaves is typical of iron deficiency. Calcium, copper and other micronutrient deficency can cause deformed leaves.

Check your soil ph, and correct if necassary. If ph too high or low plants can't utilise nutrients (nitrogen, phosphate, potassium) no matter how well fed, and this causes poor growth, stunted shoots leaves and flowers, death. Apart from Molybdenum, trace element (iron, boron etc)uptake by plants decreases as soil PH increases (becomes more alkaline.) Applying a soluable, complete fertiliser, which contains trace elements, to the leaves every week will help the roses survive until soil ph remediation takes effect. Also iron chelate (applied to leaves) will quickly correct iron deficiency for a short term solution.

Also check that the rose fertiliser you use contains trace elements. Australian soils are generally deficient. Many commonly sold rose fertilisers (and other fruit, citrus, vege fertilisers)lack trace elements. Poorly performing roses with small leaves and stunted growth can magically produce long, healthy shoots and flowers within 7 days of applying a rose fertiliser 'plus' containing trace elements - highlighting the importance of reading product labels and comparing products.

Black spot also causes yellowing and death of leaves, which affects vigour and can eventually kill the rose. Typically the yellowing leaves have black spots. Treat with appropriate fungicide. Not usually associated with the prominent veins you describe, so more likely iron/trace element deficiency.

If the rose has a virus, the whole plant would be affected, same as when we catch a virus. Doubt that it your problem.

Iron is involved in the production of chlorophyll, and iron chlorosis is easily recognized on iron-sensitive crops growing on calcareous soils. Iron also is a component of many enzymes associated with energy transfer, nitrogen reduction and fixation, and lignin formation. Iron is associated with sulfur in plants to form compounds that catalyze other reactions. Iron deficiencies are mainly manifested by yellow leaves due to low levels of chlorophyll. Leaf yellowing first appears on the younger upper leaves in interveinal tissues. Severe iron deficiencies cause leaves to turn completely yellow or almost white, and then brown as leaves die.

Iron deficiencies are found mainly on high pH soils, although some acid, sandy soils low in organic matter also may be iron-deficient. Cool, wet weather enhances iron deficiencies, especially on soils with marginal levels of available iron. Poorly aerated or compacted soils also reduce iron uptake by plants. Uptake of iron decreases...

My roses are blooming, however they are excreting copious amounts of oil. The leaves are covered and the rocks beneath are also covered. I dont know why, are they sick? I also have miniture rose bushes yelllow blooms. They have a white powder on them. I have not put any thing on them, just water. Any suggestions, please e-mail me, I would appreciate any suggestings.
