Thanks, linnea. Do the Kaufmannianas bloom with the Greigii? I have some Greigiis and they don't seem particularly early for me. They've just finished, while my neighbor's multiflowering hyacinths were done a week or two ago. So I'm hoping for the Kaufmanns to bloom just a bit earlier. About 75% of what I can find on 'Avalanche' describes it as early, so I think I'll just go for it. Dianne

Hi All Here I am again! Thanks for all your posts, and glad you like my pic (of course I had to take about 30 at the same time, dratted digital photography!). Kato that Van Sion is quite similar but it looks a lot more "shaggy" than my mystery daff. Of course without two pics showing the same angle and distance itÂs quite hard to be sure. Mine seems to have shorter petals all the way round, particularly the inner ones. Of course, like you say Bigeasy, there are lots (ha) of hybrids, and this could perhaps be a Van Sion thatÂs been doing itÂs own thing in the wilds for decades! With a name to go on I did some searches of my own so see if I could pull up some more pics and found a little nursery in Wales (UK) selling bulbs, they carry this and say that their local version of Van Sion grows wild and has green tinges. Well, I am delighted to have a name to have a start with, I think what I have is very possibly the Van Sion and if not itÂs very similar, so I can perhaps do more research along those lines. Gosh itÂs hard to stay focused though isnÂt it? There is so much out there on the net and I went off looking for the Van S. and ended up looking at all kinds of bulbs! I will see if I have with me any more photos that might help give a better comparison of the Irish daff. Michael  yes I am still in Boston and did get my lobelia in MahoneyÂs thank-you! Thanks NancyJane, Every Spring my Grannie would organize our annual trip up the Grapevine to see the wildflowers. (That used to be a very scary road to drive, too.) I bet my Aunt has thousands of slides from all those trips up to see the wildflowers. Rainbows of color growing on the slopes! The other annual event was to see the Butterfly migrations - millions of butterflies crossing the highways and byways in low-hanging clouds or white, yellow, and blue, and quite literally, stopping all traffic. You had to stop and wait for them to go bye. What a wonderful phenomena - unbelievably beautiful and so amazing to witness. ~Annie

Oops, I didn't answer all your questions. I probably wouldn't plant fall-blooming crocus in your lawn because unlike in the spring when cold soil causes slow growth of grass, the grass is growing quickly in September and will need to be mowed when the flowers are setting buds. While they are technically perennial, the critters may eat them just like spring crocus, so in reality they rarely come back for a lot of years in my garden since the voles get them. Because I love that color in the fall, I plant them anyway, usually around plants that the voles don't like Colchicum needs to be planted in a flower garden since the foliage is so large and coarse. They tend to be expensive per bulb, but they are toxic to critters and will multiply over time, so if you like that bright purply-pink color in the fall, I think that they are worth the money to buy a few of the less expensive ones. I bought a few and now have several very large clumps of flowers each fall after less than 10 years.
