Find the source/base of the cane with the red rose. If the source is below what is called the bud union (see the photo at the link below), then that is what we call a "sucker" from the rootstock. Go down to the base and scrape off that sucker from where it is attached to the rootstock. Dr. Huey is vigorous, and only by scraping it off at the base will help you save your white rose. Don't cut it, that won't help. If the source is above, then it is a sport. Methinks, though, that it is a Dr. Huey sucker. Here is a link that might be useful: Anatomy of a Bare Root Rose

Rose should be a large, pink tomato on a regular leaf vine available in its correct form from Johnny's Selected Seeds and orginating with the Amish from whom Dr. Grace Kaiser, New Holland, PA, got it (from her patient Hannah Lapp) about 1960. There is a potato leaf Rose circulating which I believe came from (or at least I got it from) Bakers Creek and the source seems to have been seed taken from a tomato bought in a farmers market in either northeastern Ohio or northwestern Pennsylvania. This particular tomato supposedly has been discontinued for sale as of late 2007 or early 2008. Red Rose is a stabilized cross of Brandywine x Rutgers and is red, and I believe grows on a regular leaf vine. The seed is available from Tomato Growers Supply last time I looked. It's about an 8-oz. fruit. But then there's another Red Rose circulating out of SSE Yearbook that's 2 - 4 ounces in size and I don't think it's related to the Brandywine x Rutgers parentage.

Vap, first a caveat: roses do not do well in this garden. With that in mind, all the HTs died except Fragrant Cloud, Gruss an Teplitz and Steven's Big Purple. Vapor ... it was all a coincidence! I went to my local nursery on the one day a year they have a sale for easy spirit rose . It was pouring buckets , but I wanted that discount! I was sprinting to the check out building with my large rose , my toddler who didn't want to walk in mud in the other hand , and a gentleman opened the door for me. Turns out he is the president of the Nashville chapter . He grabbed the rose from me and was giving me the newbie rundown on roses . So we started talking and I told him I wasn't new to roses .. he invited me to the meeting the next day and was so welcoming! He then told me all new members get a rose and he had one just for me .. "lady in red! You can't get it anywhere, it's new " he said . I smiled and said I would be there ! So now I have two lady's , and I really enjoyed the meeting. There is definitely some opinions there about everything.. just like here. ;) I found out the VP lives just down the road so we are arranging to see each other's garden . I encourage you to try a meeting !! Even if I can't make every meeting, they have discounts on roses and things in the spring and I can't wait to see the open gardens people have .
