I have some questions: First, is thing just a collection of varieties, or are you doing any breeding and development as well? And do you think any work being done could eventually bring any of the fruits you work with into economic significance? Also, I'm a college student, planning on doing a dual major in horticulture and finance, and I'm looking at a couple of different career paths, one of them being dropping the business end of things entirely and just going into a pure horticultural position, like becoming a professor of pomology at a university (or something like that). My main interest is in the (molecular) breeding and genetic engineering of underutilized potential crops, particularly fruits, tropical or otherwise, with the goal of bringing diverse crops to commercial significance. Do you have any particular tidbits of advice about going into the field of underdeveloped fruit species that you wish you would've known at my point that you could impart? Thanks.

Thanks for the inputs everyone. With regard to the ones mentioned - mainly the Pickering and Cogshall - also Ice Cream and Julie - what sizes do they grow to roughly (height and span). I guess I cannot really figure that out from the pictures posted. mango_kush - the woodapple is a hard shell fruit and the inside is kind of a pulp as shown in the picture you posted. Even when ripe it can be sour and rather than eat it raw people over there sometimes make a kind of concoction out of it by pureeing the flesh and making a kind of liquid (I cannot recall all the ingredients  I think it includes milk). So it is then consumed in a semi-solid state. I also recalled eating woodapple jam and recently ordered it online about a month ago. It is currently sitting in my refrigerator and eating it for the first time in about 25 years. It does taste like what I remember but like most jams it is much sweeter than the original fruit. I donÂt recall eating those other fruits you posted but I do recall eating some stuff that I no longer know the names for. Another thing I do recall eating is the insides of the fruit produced by the palmyrah tree. Three circles when you cut the top off and you scoop the insides out with s spoon. They make all sorts of stuff out of the palmyrah tree including some crunchy sticks and also flour thatÂs used to make some foods. Never seen any of that in the US though.

Some info I found said Jackfruit soil should not be amended w/fertilizer until 3 months or established. When grown from seed, checking the roots each time it is repotted. If the tap root is bent, cut just above the bend, or the root system will be compromised, and a weak , non fruiting tree will be the result. Once sprouted, they are grown in the greenhouse for about 30 more days. Then, they are transplanted in a deep 4"by 4" by 14" deep nursery pots with standard nursery mix, same as what they are sowed in. 40% peat, 30% coarse sand, 20% cypress sawdust, and 10% perlite. 100 days in 50% shade house, with overhead irrigation for 12 minutes a day. At this time of transplanting, they get a slow release fertilizer (18-6-8 nutricote), a drench of liquid fertilizer (20-20-20) and chelated iron(sequestrene) at recommended rates. At about 100 days they are the diameter of a pencil, perfect for grafting. Those that are not grafted are checked for tap root restriction, and cut if necessary, then transplanted into a 7" by 7" by 14" nursery pot. They are then given another dose of the same fertilizer treatment as the first transplant. Temperatures are about 82-89 and 77 at night, fahrenheit. Ph is 6-7.5

I also got similar amounts of S. zalacca and wallichiana. I don´t think is very good idea place them so close together (like I did, potted, though)unless you plant to constantly prune them since salaks leaves will destroy any softed like leave (pedalai, etc) when they´re wind moved... >=/ marang is a riddle to myself, I remember that movie of "awakenings" (spelling??, Williams and De Niro) movie, lol, if first grew large leaves (my favorite juvenile artocarpus spp. leaves) in its first year of like, then it stopped growing (and eventually these leaves dried), then it pushed small leaves and grew some more and now they´re again stunted!!!! what´s wrong with them?? my pedalai is almost 2m tall (6ft) and the marangs only 30cm (1ft) and both are the same age... How is your marang doing, eldys?!?! I´m thrilled with this one....
