The smaller sedum are nice and soapwort... do you mind plants that would hang/trail? Perhaps Black-eyed Susan "Vine" (I think I have the Latin for that one listed on my trade list to clarify better), morning glories (especially Japanese MG's and MGs could be planted at the base of the wall and climb up - plus they can self-sow and in your climate, you stand a really good chance of them being "extended" annuals), ivy (those that tolerate full sun) always look awesome against/on stone walls in my opinion... I know there's a "recipe" for taking existing moss and making it into a "paste" and "painting" it on (hrmm reminds me of a Chia pet hehe) and you could likely find a moss that grooved on full sun... Miniature luffa has a delicate vine and much smaller fruits than standard luffa and has dainty little yellow blooms.... I wonder what plant "forms" you prefer though and what colours - foliage and/or blooms... that would help to narrow down some choice selections for you. Hopefully you can avoid using chicken wire and get things in place without it... it can be a pain to get out once plants are established....

Thank you for your replies. Richard - of the two pictures of S. regla, Huntington BG apperas to have the form I'm seeking - upright and open. I'm looking for one that grows 6 or more feet tall, like the one in the picture I shared. Ours grows on the north side of our house in amended clay and gets sun only in summer. And, the S. melissodora is beautiful, but I'm seeking a Salvia that blooms in warm colors (orange, red, yellow) to contrast with other nearby plants with blooms in the blue range. KermitC - I believe I have S. flocculosa which I purchased at a plant sale several years go and it was labeled 'Rio Bamba'. It's currently growing in a spot that gets only afternoon sun. It is 3-4 feet tall with open sprawling growth -- do you think it should grow much taller than that in full sun? Research of S. fulgens tells me it may not grow as tall as I'd like - 6' or more feet tall.

Hi Clint Vegetable gardening is different than ornamental. Full sun is best for a lot of them, depending on what you are growing and the season. We are coming to warmer months so I have my very productive tomatoes in morning sun and afternoon shade, zucchini full day sun, cucumbers and peppers got some sun and shade from a tree, have greens and lettuce, some in full sun, some in some shade, eggplants full sun, beans in full sun, still got some carrots to harvest before the heath in full sun, onions in full sun. To be successful, it is very important to plant them at the right time for your area. Silvia

If you do summer vegetables it really wouldn't matter about the shade in the winter (as they wouldn't be there, then), and 6 plus hours of sun in the summer is adequate for most. Peppers enjoy being on the drier side - I'm not sure I'd call them drought tolerant but they do handle being dry better than most vegetables. If you plant tomatoes deeply enough, you should be able to water infrequently but really soak them when you do water. If you're not worried about drought tolerant, almost any vegetable will do well with the amount of summer sun you have, and I can't think of any that will do well with that much shade in winter.
