If it is indeed Ganoderma, would it be safe to eat as a medicinal mushroom? How can you tell? Are all Ganoderma species edible & medicinal, like Reishi? "Usually known as Reishi or Ling zhi, Ganoderma Lucidum is one of the highest ranked medicines in Chinese medicine and has extended to usage in Japanese and Korean medicine as well as having some prevalence in the West. Its mechanisms are diverse, but are usually localized around moderating the immune system (reducing its activity when overstimulated, increasing its effects when deficient) and proliferating the immune system at the same time, increasing the amount of active cells and thus the potential for their effects. Ganoderma also possesses anti-oxidative effects, and can act on a few other systems such as aldose reductase (which can help with diabetic symptoms) and 5-alpha redutase (which can help with prostate cancer risk). Due to these effects paired with the modulation of the immune system, Ganoderma Lucidum shows promise in being therapeutic for insulin resistance, prostate cancer risk, and a variety of conditions correlated with metabolic syndrome. It is also well known and touted for its anti-cancer effects, which are secondary to both potentiating the immune system (usually through activation of natural killer cells, and increasing tumor necrosis factor-alpha) and also some other mechanisms that allow Ganoderma to be synergistic within itself in reducing tumor growth and reducing the chance of metastasis." Marcelo, I just planted a fare few seed of M. lenticellata, beautiful tree and worthy of greater planting. Try Yuruga Nursery on the web they maybe able to help, otherwise email me and Ill forward you concern to a friend of mine. I know of a tree that recently fruited all over the place, but that was three weeks ago and the seed is prob old now, but see how you go. Kris

Hi Tom, well you may not find people with all of these species as some are hard to come across. I have Citrus australasica seeds when they are ready, which will be in a month or so. You can obtain Citrus garrawayei (Mt White Lime)from a contact of mine if you want to email me regarding this. I have never seen Citrus maideniana before and I wonder if it has been lumped under another species- I think it occurs up the Cape and additionally within PNG, but I could be wrong here. Citrus glauca (Desert Lime), I havent tried at my place as we get 70 inches of rain per year!, Citrus australis (Round Lime) grows well here and I have a tree that drops loads of fruit, it fruited a few months ago so I presume you may have to wait until about Jan to get more, I do know of people that you can purchase them from. Rainforest( Pink) Pearl, is a cultivar/select of Citrus australasica, you will pay at least $14 per tree for these-I know where you can get them if you want- otherwise I have a red fruiting C. australasica which is a similar form as to 'Rainforest Pearl" Russell River Lime Citrus inodora grows slowly here however flowers when small (20cm tall) I know where you can get plants, but no seed. I have seen these in the wild and they have large leaves like a 'normal' citrus. As for "other hybrids" I wouldnt grow them from seed as you wont know what your going to get! Cheers from Kris

Very cool, if a bit perplexing. Hard to fathom, for just one example, how the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan's Upper Peninsula could be in any but the highest category. That's a completely wild and unsettled region! And no, I'm not guessing-I've been there many times. All forested, all big white pines, hemlocks, and their many hardwood associates, to simplify. My point being, there's hardly any civilization there beyond a few very small towns, and the rest is heavy, native forest. Not to nitpick, but I can see other just as unexpected results all over that thing. All in all though, very cool. Just wish I could make out more of the print on the other ones. +oM
