New Delbard Release in Brisbane this weekend

Hi all,

I have heard on the "rose vine" that you will be able to see an amazing "show style" display of beautiful Delbard roses and also see the new Delbard rose Maurice Utrillo which is a red background with splashes of white and golden yellow coming up from the centre! It looks amazing a real show stopper without being in your face as some fancy roses can be.

The location for this fun will be at Carseldine Garden World this Fri Sat Sun. So I thought I would let you all know so you don't miss out as you usually can't buy potted Delbards in Brisbane. I will be going on Sunday if any of you Rosies are around?? Some friends have told me the Delbard display at the Melbourne flower show is amazing!!!! Did any of you see the lovely one at Gardening Australia from Brindabellas- Toowoomba?

I love my Delbards, the perfume and colors are amazing very different to the usual colors you get from other breeders, so it's worth a pop in and like me you might get out of there with only a few ........

Thanks for letting us know, Brissy. Carseldine is a bit of a trek for me but I'll try to get there. I missed the GA segment but did see their display in Melbourne; very impressive. I only have Papi Delbard and Grand Siecle but after Melbourne have added about 6 to my 'must have' list. Rankins have some as 90cm standards. Has anyone tried these?

g'day marion, she is quiet comfortable her problem causes more confoundment to her at present as she is still in denial so isn't prepared to look at her own situation and work out the organic causes for her stresses and strains. i wouldn't be shy to attend a university or anywhere for that matter introverted isn't one of my fortes chuckle, just where i am here it is very isolated and there is no way i can get into town to do anything. there simply isn't any help for people like myself in rural areas. that i was able to get someone to pick me up once a fortnight to do grocery shopping took a lot of doing, my main push has been trying to get e/mail pen pals or msn chatters to fill those hours. at present my mind is on bev a lot of the time, and our main aim is to sell our place so i can be closer to her, so my head is pretty full of all that for now just need to fill the many lonely hours i guess. thanks to all her for the very many suggestions. len

Marlorena - you're so right, I've been put off picking a rose for my new garden based on online articles or even comments in the forum here... but I keep reminding myself that different climates & soil and just general environment can make a big difference. There's also always the possibility that one particular rose happened to be sickly or weak genetically - and then that becomes that person's "experience" of that rose, which might then be generalised. I guess there's no substitute for personal experience! For example - this isn't a "good" or "bad" review thing but a "general description" thing - I picked Nahema and Pierre de Ronsard (Eden) as my first climbers based on several online sources which mentioned them as being thornless or near thornless... HAH! Yeah right. Well, the 2 that I have are covered in huge thorns - even the leaves are prickly! It's a nightmare trying to train & tie them to the trellis. Maybe it's because they're grafted on Fortuniana - I don't know - I notice the same thing on several of the Austins I picked - because they're supposed to be "almost thornless" - none of them are. The best I can hope for is that the huge thorns are spaced far apart enough for me to have some stem to hold! LOL. So now I take everything I read with a pinch of salt and remind myself that it might be different in my garden. That doesn't mean it's not helpful to hear others' experiences, of course - I'm always grateful for those! ~ HY

Kristine I agree! While i was super excited to get my first Queen Elizabeth, I wish there were more options! I went to Walmart on a whim and thy just happened to have just finished setting up the roses so I got first pick. Joseph’s coat, LC ( woo hoo! Got another, but there were only like 3 in the shelf compared to a dozen or so of other types), Joseph’s coat, gene boerner, iceberg (I know it’s a BS magnet but I almost feel obligated to try lol), robusta, Don Juan and carefree beauty. But other than that it seems flooded the same few types.

Hi Hazel,

Just to let you know the nursery has a lovely gift shop and coffee shop so you could make a day of it if you wanted. I plan to gorge on some of their cakes ....they are to die for!!!

Judy, for you the world! I will take some photos for you or source some if I get there too late on Sunday and they have sold most of their stock.

I know about the cakes, Brissy; treated myself on a birthday a couple of years ago. Seem to recall I bought Abraham Darby that day.

I hope the weekend goes well. Maurice Utrillo is a beauty.
It has been selling well since we got them in. Wish i could have got down there . Any plans for another get together in the near future?

I went, I saw and I conquered! Talk about being in a lollyshop the Delbards are truly beautiful. I was very good and only bought one for my friends birthday .........maybe because I already most of them : )

Did any one else go, I saw so many people going out of there with 4-7 Delbards each and apparently it was a huge hit at the Nursery. I will get some photos to post.

Good morning Brissy. Clifton Hardware is my work place.
Small country town between Toowoomba and Warwick. The bagged roses are a big seller every year, sold a heap on the weekend and we now have a garden centre attached to the hardware so can carry more stock. Delbards and David Austins in pots . They look great and the fragrance makes a huge difference to the shop.

I didn't make it, Brissy but glad to hear you enjoyed it. We got busy extending a path. This may mean more room for roses; not sure yet.
