Gene Map For Roses

Being envolved in some other areas of life, gene mapping is proving to have some wonderful applications towards genetic disease identification and prevention. I took a brief look at the web and see there is some work being done on gene mapping the rose and there was mention of studies looking for the genes that give resistants to black spot.

Does anyone know the progress of this research? Any current references for studies concerning gene mapping for black spot?

You are way ahead of me but I was so intrigued by the question I went looking myself.

A rose progeny to study this trait has been produced by David Byrne and it is currently being used to develop a genetic map at Clemson University - a Genomics Institute in South Carolina. I couldn't access any info and there may be none published for the public domain.

Found out some stuff though. They have done some trialling and come up with this list -

Black Spot Â resistant:

Black Spot, Powdery Mildew and Cercospora Leaf Spot Âresistant:

Alba rose: ÂAlba Semi-PlenaÂ

This came from Ohio University - under ideal conditions of leaf wetness, humidity and temperature the spores can germinate and infect in 1 day, cause symptoms in 4 to 5 days, and produce new spores that can infect additional leaf, flower and cane tissue within 10 to 11 days. Spores are easily spread to new locations by air currents.

This from the University of Maine - the spores must be wet for at least 7 hours before they can germinate
disease develops most rapidly at about 75F.

The site below has a detailed list of blackspot resistant roses and includes those that are highly susceptible.

You may already know all this but I didn't - thanks for posting an interesting question.

I think has been put together by people who are not rose growers from other sources. They list Peace as blackspot susceptible, which it is, and then have it in a table as resistant! And Mme Isaac Pereire as moderately resistant? Not in my experience.

My bed is oval. Along one curved edge are cherish rose trees. Right thru the centre go these two rows. And the other edge has china dolls. I am planning around 6 tall sages between the trees and the gene b's. My flush is still intact. Only a few of the buds remain unopened now, rest have all unfolded. Some flowers have faded a bit, as is expected, but are holding the form. And yes, I will return with a pic when the flush starts to fade. That picture was taken about a week ago. Here's what I took a minute ago - 2 of them died due to automatic overwatering in winter, and you can see the space, so I am going to have to find new ones to replace.

Thanks so much for the prompt and helpful responses! Emailing Gregg might have been an option a while back, but I just got the email saying how backed up Vintage is on emails with all the orders they've had coming in (yay, keep it up folks - there are still some great roses on the list!). That's why it's so nice to be able to pose this question to experts like you! The bush isn't very tall, although with a second year plant it's hard to tell (yes, I pinched off last year's blooms faithfully), so Fred Loads looks like an outside chance. I'll check for white tendencies on the reverse, but I think it's pretty consistent color on both sides of the petal so it'll be Poppy till I have reasons to think otherwise. HMF doesn't have any height predictions for Poppy - any guesses from everyone else? Thanks for the ID everyone - it's kind of nice after all to end up with a relatively uncommon Soenderhousen rose, since Gene Boerner should be replaceable elsewhere. The color will be a bit of a contrast in my "pink and white" bed, but I suppose it could use some shaking up or I'll move it if it really bugs me. Cynthia

Kaye, your roses look just so pretty. I just could not resist not posting. Miss you so much. Caldwell Pink is just hard to resist for a landscaping rose down here. Not really that exciting but, it faithful. Beautiful for its petals sprinkling around bridal pictures for sure. Many took here around girls hair and shoulder. Around the ground and dress. Flower girls. Just sweet. Clean and pure. GB. nice. but I agree, 'Gene Boerner': the biggest drawback is lack of fragrance. might as well just grow BD for the fragrance. Bill Warnier. I totally forgot about that rose. It is so pretty and a good rose. Seems if I remember though down here it wanted spraying. Not sure what zone 9 you are. Hugging Louisiana, damp, me, or San antionio area. drier. This Texas is so weird with those zones. Just not fair. But. We do have long growing seasons others do not. This morning it was 58 and I thought I would freeze to death. Went shopping instead of tilling and bought me a trellis.. and several pot stands. Holders. I will till tommorrow. But back to the GB. Its tall nothing like CP. But instead of GB I think I might go for the Paul McCarthy. You know. I about stayed away from my main gardens with the perfect blooms and the perfect foliage after Rita and spray accident with roundup a month apart. Real mental upset for a rose addict. But, that Paul just does not seem to give up. It likes this Texas. Plus you got the smell. Just pretty as all roses. Its not the longest lasting vase blooms but perfect for the time. Longer than some and lots in Texas. Does keep his color good. I have not sprayed him in four years. That rose just refuses to let me give up. Trick is just cut those long stems though to keep him controlled. You can control the height. Be the boss. Just me. at the moment.

If I remember right, together with those batches of bagged roses that came in with this rose is a JFK but I didn't want a white...I wanted a Gene Boerner!!! Looking at Help me Find though says that JFK has a strong fragrance, this rose does not have that. The pic looks very much like it though.

Could this be the reason - from the site below - updated 4 September 2004.

Anyone who has ever grown a rose knows that blackspot adapts to the chemicals that we use and has a way of getting our favorite rose no matter what we do to try to stop it. Blackspot is not as mysterious as it seems. Through research, it has been found that different races of the disease are found in different geographic locations, and a plant that is resistant to blackspot in one area may be very susceptible to the race of D. rosea found in another area. Commerce is also partly responsible for the transport of disease from one part of the country to another. Hence, your perfect rose may have picked up a new strain of blackspot from a new rose.

Over two years of field testing at two sites in Texas: College Station (David Byrne) and Overton (Dr. H. Brent Pemberton) of Floribundas, Grandifloras, Hybrid Teas, Shrubs, Rugosa Hybrids, Species/hybrids, and Basye roses showed a wide difference in the reaction to black spot which ranges from death of the plant within two years (ÂPeaceÂ) to no spots at all (Rosa roxburghii)

I am way out of my depth here - haven't a scientific bone in my body - find the parts I can understand interesting that's all. For all I know this is common knowledge to most of you - would be to people like Lozza I know.
