Plant in loosened, existing soil - without amending - and mulch afterward. Or if you are convinced roses just won't be any good in what you have now excavate this existing soil over a bed sized area, replace with good topsoil (one containing mineral components like sand and silt, and not just all or mostly organic material). Or dump good topsoil on top of the existing soil, plant in that - without blending the new and old soils together. In other words make raised beds, berms or mounds of topsoil. Your sandy soil will eat up organic matter quickly = no point in adding it in the first place, unless it is planned to dig the roses and any companion plants up every few years and re-amend. How many amended planting holes do you we think pioneers who planted roses on former homestead sites - that are still growing there - dug? How many of the field grown roses we buy do we think were planted in amended planting holes by commercial growers? Yet somehow it's thought they need them to survive after we buy them.

When I first spotted the video, I was expecting it was from the Rose Forum’s own jj, and was confused because I didn’t think she was a particular fan of Kordes, given that she lives in rose paradise. I think it had to have been first flush. Early on, he does say “… it’s been a very cold summer so far, and wet“.
