I thing you can probably also re-root the rosette leaves, if you manage to pull them off at their bases.... but they look like really tough old birds....so it might prove to be too much of a herculean task! I echo the above advice... chop off the top, add cinnamon powder it to prevent rotting, and let the pups grow a bit before removing them.... Interesting development, eh....?

Ooooh, those are nice! I wasn't aware there were variegated forms. I have the regular green one. It's been inside since the end of October in the greenhouse as we can get to - degrees C outside. It will be there till around mid March probably. Hopefully it will pull through the winter again, it looked fine the other day:-) I put a bubble wrap tent over the top as the roof can drip condensation. I grew it from a tiny 2inch pup that was gifted to me. I lost one pup that I detached when quite small but the big guy is growing two more that I've left on a bit longer so I want to try again with those this coming season.Gill

I love these Agaves they're so pretty. So let me see here they're all in bags? In your climate these should grow easy. I would cut the big one first leaving about 5-6 inches of stem. Then just start separating the whole bunch little by little. These are pretty resilient. So if you break some leaves and roots no problem. They will be just fine:). I think 3 feet is a good amount of space between them. They will fill the space out. If you do end up cutting roots off or anything along those lines. You probably will only have to callus over the big cuttings. Just to be safe. Let these plants callus over for at least a week. The bigger stems if cut could take a little longer to scab over. This is important because you don't want to get fungus. Just keep in a well lit very dry spot. You could sprinkle some cinnamon on some of the big cuts. Cinnamon acts as a natural fungicide. I never have to use this, but it's dry where I live.Your rootless cutting may look sad, but this is only temporary as soon as they grow roots they will perk right up:). I'm curious what's your soil like where you live? I stick my Agave Attenuata in no ammended soil. They're fine:). You gotta remember they're growing in bags now;).

If the main stem is damaged beyond redemption maybe try cutting it off with a sterile knife till good healthy tissue is reached, often attenuatas will regenerate from the base and throw out new pups. My regular green one developed a unhealthy top after cold damage last year, I’ve cut it off and now have several pups growing happily from the severed base. It lives in an unheated greenhouse here in the U.K. with temps as low as -8C so far and the only extra protection is from a thin horticultural fleece thrown over it and all my other plants in there.
