Dying Agave attenuata

I live in Sunset zone 17 (Berkeley). These Agave attenuate (see photo) were planted about 2 years ago. Looked great for most of that period but noticed in past month that some (or all) are dying. Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be? I could replant, but no point in that if there is an issue with the soil. Have noticed lots of sprouting fungi this year, but not right near these plants. Also, perhaps unrelated, a cycad 15 feet away has died. Should I take out anything that still seems alive?
