I think Sara-Ann posted here more recently than 8 years ago. I joined this forum in 1998, but was absent for 10 years, until I retired and re-joined in 2020. Sara-Ann was still posting then... I remember that b/c I have a garden friend in OK who abandoned roses, so I was always interested in Sara-Ann's posts about everything she was growing. Diane, the northern Idaho poster you're thinking of is Berry Pie... she had the grey Pit Bull named Amara. She lived in an apartment (I think with her son) and gardened there. Melodye from Melbourne was a regular when I rejoined in 2020, but then she disappeared soon after her husband died. I always love it when someone revives a really old thread here, and I see folks who were regulars back in my first iteration here in the late 90s and 2000s... life and people move on :-D

Warm extended autumn: what have you been doing?

Mizzteek Z6 MA, the forsythia has set all its bloom buds for next year already, so the particular buds that are blooming now won't bloom again next spring. However, there are probably branches that aren't blooming now that will have flowers in the spring. Once the hours of chilling needed for a plant have been experienced, some plants will bloom all or partly in a warm fall like this, even those that usually bloom in spring. We (visiting family and I) have been spending a lot of time out-of-doors walking through the woods and fields in the area when it hasn't been actually raining. Previous Christmas visits have involved visiting some of the same places on snowshoes or skis, so this has been unique having temperatures in the 50's for several days. We cut our tree (balsam fir) from the woods across the road early last week, so it's a bit Charlie Brown, but it holds ornaments just fine. We are expecting some form of frozen precipitation on Tuesday, so I have been enjoying this final hurrah of fall warmth! I will want to go out to the garden and stomp down all the vole tunnels prior to the cold temperatures in the hopes that they will settle in for the winter elsewhere!

Like Vaporvac, my head is exploding! Haha I’m looking up so many of these gorgeous roses on HMF. I agree about Polka. I’m in love with it. Super healthy, vigorous grower on own-root, big, beautiful perfect blooms. A real winner. I ordered it last spring from Heirloom Roses. It’s in a pot at the moment and I plan on leaving it in but putting it up against a “climbing wall” for next spring. The blooms are giant! I don’t know how the blooms would do with Western sun exposure. I baby my roses with a shade cover and Polka got late afternoon shade although I see you’re in Zone 6 and probably not as much under a burning high desert sun like I am. Teka, how do you like your Polka? Henrik, your photos are beautiful. Do you have a favorite out of your group? Hans, how do you like Chippendale. I’ve been eyeing this one for a while. Your Augusta Luise is stunning. Gosh, they’re all so beautiful everyone… especially the tree frog. Kate, your Queen of Sweden stopped me in my tracks. Gorgeous. Thanks Sara-Ann, these rose color threads are getting me thru the Winter! And hey, it’s December 21st… don’t the days begin to get longer??

diggerdee - Thanks for asking, devil's club is described here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/oplopanax_horridus.shtml It's definitely not for everybody in a home perennial garden, rather its 'horridus' thorns are lamented by hikers ! but native Alaskans and my forager friends use it medicinally - one day I will tackle peeling the stems and making a salve for my arthritis but for now I do purchase it and I think it helps :)) I love it for its architecturally reaching stems, white flowers, pure red berries that the birds love and it just grows naturally at the edges of my property. Anyway, August isn't over yet so I took a few photos recently: Enjoying the color of this geranium:

Hi Rosesforme,
I think it only went on for 2 days which was last satday and last sunday. (where are you? I'm in Nth Balwyn) Never mind if you missed this one, because there is a Melb International Flower show on as well from 6-10 April. There will be some roses on display there for sure.
Thank you Sandie and Thanks for the link, yeah Jean and Lozza were there. She won quite a few award as well. You should have gone. It was my first time and I really enjoyed myself.

Hi coolyoda
Thanks for your reply .I am in Vermont South. I went to this show last year and loved it.
I am going to the Melb Flower Show tomorrow, all day!!!
My husband is looking after the kids so I can go unhassled. Its a bit much to ask them to stay for an extended time,as there will be a lot to see.
I will look forward to the roses section in particular.
