Frangipani cutting

Hi,

I'm very new to gardening and just wanted some advice about growing a frangipani tree from a cutting.

I have taken a cutting which is about 60cm long and has a couple of little branches. I let it dry out for about 2 weeks and then planted it straight in the ground. I used some slow release plant feed pellets, and watered it almost daily. 4 weeks later and the plant hasn't sprouted any leaves.

Is there anything else I need to have done? Or something I've done which I shouldn't have?!

I live on Bathurst Island in the Northern Territory, where the weather is tropical and most things just grow hassle free. So I'd like to know why I've failed...

Hi Sam,
I'm in Nhulunbuy, same conditions. If your frangipani cutting is still firm and has green tips don't worry. I don't even worry about drying them out up here. Just throw them in the general direction of some dirt!!(stick it in the soil) Pretty soon you've got a frangipani tree. Depending on which type you have, many frangipanis are deciduous. It will grow some leaves soon or at least as soon as it starts to get warmer, if not, e-mail me and Ill send you some. I've got some nice colours and types.

Thanks Brendon! The cutting is still firm and has the green tips it had when I cut it.

I'll give it a bit more time and hopefully I'll see some leaves.

And, thanks for the offer of your cuttings - I might take you up on that at some stage!

Sounds like you have rot on your hands. The worst thing you can do is water a plumeria cutting when it doesn't have roots. I never water until I see the first set of leaves growing. What you can try to do is to cut the rotten section off. Just make sure that the cuttings has the white sap or it is dead. Let them dry again and make sure there is no rot. Once the cuttings are firm again, I would pot them up again. Here is a method I learned on the Aloha Plumeria group. Take a whole raw egg and put it in the bottom of your pot, on top of an inch of soil. Then fill the rest of the pot and add your cutting. The plumeris feeds off of the egg, which in turn helps it root. Good luck and keep us posted. Andrew

The frangiepani should move very easily, even without cutting off all the limbs. I don't know where you are, as my computer is doing a trick this morning and won't let me pull your page up, but everybody all over the world is having a season change right about now. This would be the time to move it, I would think. Are you moving into winter (ideal) or into spring (o.k., too)? As for cuttings, I don't know about taking huge cuttings. One inch would be good, I have seen/done bigger, but they don't seem to take off any faster after rooting. Somebody else is going to be able to help you more with this, but I wouldn't rush to cut this tree down to a stump. IMHO, Janie

If they become soft and sort of empty inside they have died, as long as they are hard they are alive and working hard to develop roots. It might take a few months, just forget them, water from time to time, not too much as they can rot. The one nibbled by snails should sprout in other places if the tip is damaged, I would put some wood ash or wood dust as a barier against the pests. You are doing very well for a person who supposedly does not know much about gardening, have fun.
