Cairns Tropical Garden Show .. and more

MotherÂs Day weekend, 7th/8th May 05 at Cairns Showground. 8.30am - 5pm

I can't be there but for those who can, it sounds pretty good.

In addition, Margaret Barwick and Anton van der Schans, the Author and Editor of "Tropical & Subtropical Trees", will be attending.

Margaret and Anton have already given great support to the Tropical Flowers & Trees Australia Network.

This network arose from a meeting of interested people in February and has been growing in numbers since. The prospects are that it will result in forming an association comprised of hobbyists, specialists and botanical gardens both within Australia and overseas.

It will be inclusive of many tropicals - trees, shrubs, climbers - and will complement rather than rival, other tropical and specialist plant groups worldwide.

Look out for Margaret and Anton at the Cairns show, the TFTA will have a stand there . Anyone interested in more information, or willing to actively participate at the TFTA stand in Cairns , please contact me.

"Participation" can be as little as minding the stall for an hour, talking to tropical plant lovers, or having the special pleasure of meeting these two very knowledgeable tropical plant people.

Margaret and Anton will also be in Brisbane from 10th to 14th May, a couple of special events have been organised for anyone interested in meeting them , including a talk and book-signing at Mt Cootha auditorium on the evening of Thursday 12th May. This needs to be booked however if anyone is interested you need to let me know very QUICKLY.

I have no financial interest in this, just wishing to share news about the Cairns show. And for southern Qld folk who can't get to Cairns, to have the opportunity to

meet two people who are so knowledgeable and passionate about tropical and subtropical climate trees & plants , from their travels in so many parts of the world.

Margaret's book is also very much worth the buy.
Most of the photos taken in Australia were taken by Anton.
Ill let Anton know that he has been spoken of so highly!

Eric oh, I'll be honest with you, I haven't a clue. I bought the first one because it was discount rack and it was in bad shape. I didn't know if it was going to make it. It took awhile before I got my first white bloom. I've been trying to find out the name because white is really rare around here. The second one I got was also discount rack save but it didn't come with a tag. This one is kind of fuschia with a wonderful scent. Its petty common around here so I should be able to find out the name. The last one I got is from a group I jokingly refer to as the New Orleans minis. There is Bayou Marie, Bourbon Street and Baton Rouge. I think there is more in this group but not sure. So I got Bayou Marie because it has the most beautiful pink flowers, which slightly darken when the temp drops. Anyway, I have yet to find a real red dwarf. They say they are red but its more of a dark pink. My secret is once the leaves have drop then don't prune them. I wait until I see new buds on the old wood in the late spring before I cut away any dead limbs. Last winter was one the coldest in over ten years. Most of the thick branches made it. I also mulch in the fall. All three are rated for zone 7 are suppose to die back to the ground but somehow they didn't get the message. I wish some school in the midwest would do a crape myrtle study to see which ones are hardy to zone 5 or possibly lower.

Thanks for the positive comments, brom friends. Glad you enjoyed it - just sorry you weren't all there. LOL, Andrew, that 100% pay rise sounds good, but my maths is poor - what is 100% of $0? The alien hieroglyphics were most annoying. I now know that one should change the file to text only, when copying and pasting a Word document. The hieroglyphics substituted all the inverted commas, apostrophes, and dots...... which did not show in the preview. Lisa - I know nothing about why there weren't more Aussie hybrids available for sale. Probably distance to get them there would have been a hindrance. Shane Z was selling some of his hybrids, as was Peter T. I can only assume that due to restrictions on O.S. visitors' purchases, the sellers catered more for Aussies - the majority. Kerry - Thanks once again for a wonderful photo journey - As your mate says, there's more to life than just broms. What a botanical trip and what beautiful plant varieties there are when you look past the broms. Your pics brought back great memories of a trip my wife and I did up there some years back. I really think you and Stephania should consider joining forces and doing a photo book or a DVD on "The Wonders of Nature". Bromcrazy - We crossed the river and went on a day trip up "the dirt track" which all the protests were about when it was originally pushed through the rainforest. The driver of the 4X4 told us they now need a permanent maintenance crew to stop the rainforest from taking over the road again, so it didn't harm the environment all that much as the rainforest was right to the edge of the road when we went. However he did show us an area which was cleared and had a couple of rusty old VW vans covered in weeds and heaps of rusty cans and plastic bottles scattered around. Yes you've guessed it, that was the camp of the "professional protesters" and probably the only real damage to the environment. Don't get me wrong, I agree with reasonable protests against any threats to the environment, what I don't agree with is the "ratbag element" who get on the band waggon, cause environmental damage themselves and pretend to be protesters only to get genuinne protesters a bad name. Hi Sanda, Yes, we have 2 tours planned for next year - late spring and late summer. I like to give the hosts plenty of time to recover from winter and let whether warm up a bit. The actual homes/locations are still undetermined but there are quite a few we are considering. We still have a couple of fun events planned for this year. Sometime in late September we are planning to have a tropical arrt show at the nursery. Artisans of various mediums will be showing their works of art including scultures, oils on canvass, waterpaintings, etc. We are still open to more artists so feel free to pass the word along. The dates/details for all the events will be sent out to everyone on our mail list (sign up at www.tropicalvibe.com). I will try to post the events and details here but if I get to busy with our landscape design work and nursery operations I might forget. Sounds fantastic - unfortunately, it clashes with my schedule. I'm getting on a plane on the 9th May, but its taking me south, not north :(

Thanks for that information Alison. I will certainly be there as it is always a good show with something new to see every year. I will look out for Anton and, hopefully, invest in the book.

Please let me know if the Cairns Post put out the 'Tropical Gardening and Landscaping Magazine.
I never found out if it was published in 2004.
Great magazine still refer to it today.
