Help Identify this tree

Hi all,
I would like some help identifying this tree - it resides in the Blue Mountains NSW - probably about 20 feet tall. I have no idea what it is. Pics of the tree and a close up of its fruit (?) are in the phot album. Any help would be much appreciated.

Just a wild guess, but it is very similar to my harpullia pendula: a tree that can grow to 15 metres, but rarely does in cultivation. The branching and leaves are very similar, not too sure about the fruits. H. pendula is native to 'coastal, north-east Australia'.

Thanks funnelweb, I had a google of harpullia pendula - the leaves do look very similar but their fuit/seed look a bit different. However, whilst googling that I did find another candidate - Cupaniopsis anacardioides - it could be that??

You can eat the fruits of the Lychee too, if I'm thinking of the some plant. They are white fruits, right? They are canned and you can get them in Asian grocery stores and sometimes regular stores. Those and Longons are on chinese buffets. I picked Longons and took them home when I was in Florida a few years ago. They are great fresh, but, don't keep well on a 19 hour drive back to Pa from Florida. I wanted my dad to taste them fresh, not just canned. We cut the bad parts off, I can see why they aren't in stores like fresh apricots and peaches etc. Lychees have a nice delicate flavor. I never had a fresh one, just canned too.

Specifically that looks just like a Tonto Crape Myrtle,...just planted one in my front yard 6 mos ago and have been getting WOW's since the red blooms came out. It could also be a Pink Velour Crape Myrtle also, as both have the red blooms, only the Tonto will grow a few feet taller. I also have a Muskogee Crape Myrtle in the prime front lawn spot, that guy will top out around 15 - 16 Ft. Now have a total of 5 CR's,...easy maintenance,..minimal watering & fertilizing,..just what I was looking for as I get older ! LOL

"That plant has deep tap roots rather than broad shallow roots. " It is not an either/or proposition. It has both a taproot/anchorage root as well as a broadly spreading, shallow system of feeder roots........as do virtually all other tree species. In fact, one of the reasons beyond seeding freely that makes this species invasive is its ability to generate root sprouts at a significant distance from the mother tree. So yes, it could definitely be affecting a patio 25' away.

bugs have a way of finding stressed plants .... and a tree that caught fire is probably stressed .... 3 years isnt much time in tree time.. which is counted in decades ... probably one of the wooly aphid type creatures .. but i cant tell from the pix ... but it looks awful close to the house... it might be worth your while to have a certified arborist give you an onsite inspection of the trees overall health ... add your big city name to the link below ken https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=isa+certified+arborist&ia=web

Yes, I agree, 3FSmif, but also I don't think it's Cupaniopsis, the 'Tuckaroo', as the leaves on that tree are blunt at the end. Might I suggest you try the Gardenweb site, 'Name That Plant', I've found that helpful.
