can i put worms from the wrom farm into the garden ?

hi, i have a worm farm, that is working wonderfully..can i put the worms from the worm farm into the garden? i do not no what type of worms they are, it has been a long time since i bought the worms :-) if i can put the worms into the garden do i still have to feed them veggie scraps or will they feed on the organic matter that is in the garden ??? mainly cow poo.. hope someone can help..thanks in advance

Yes, I think you can do that. With that cow manure it will be a veritable smorgasbord for them.

hi clare, its not really a good idea, the worm farm worms like the red wrigglers like different conditions to normal earthworms, and because theyre surface dwellers theyll most likely get picked off by the birds anyway. if you have lots of goodies in your garden like manure and compost youll get regular earthworms arriving on their own so it's not necessary to add the worm farm ones into the garden.

//////// wait a moment IIIIII ok that's better. I was stuck sideways. It appears to be outside. The smell should quickly get less worse. Maybe a temporary fan would help. I think it is the grass. I am more worried the grass is hot. Is it? What stops rain from flooding it. Nice paint job. It was nice of him to build it for you. It appears to be made with love. What is the bottom of the bin made of? Were the grass clipping still green? If so they are food not bedding. I would add shredded cardboard. I would shred a big bag of extra cardboard. Possible put it in a sealed container right next to or under the bin. I suspect he may sneak back from time to time with some more grass or veggies. I bet he is on his way home from Starbucks right now with 20 pounds of coffee grounds for the bin. Your job is to keep adding bedding and bake him a nice pie to thank him. Maybe put a lock on it :-) the bin not the pie. Feel free to add a cup of garden soil and egg shells. Note worms that live in garden soil are not the same type as worms that live in compost bins. Also if the gentleman has that much vegetable waste he might enjoy learning about bokashi. If he tires of that BSFL Black Soldier Fly Larvae. Keep him busy or he will build a second bin for you. Since the first bin is a boy the second one will be a girl and he will paint it pink.

It is almost like there is a glass ceiling on vermicomposting. Somewhere around a persons Zillionth millionth worm this thing happens and worms die and even tons of correct application of worming principals do not save the worms. Posters who are serious about vemicomposting are seeing this happen. The same thing happened I think to redhen on another board. I do not see any practice you are doing wrong. You probably know that. And yet this worm dying thing seems to happen to the best. Yet it should not. It is a mystery. Thus your accurate depiction you gave is very valuable. Anecdotal evidence might be the key. This just seems to happen. It is the detailed observation of the armature vermiculturest that may solve it. Just like most observations of new things in space are by hobbyists. Why do these worms decide to die? Is it carbon dioxide? Acid? Lack of bedding? Stress? How does one determine if a worm is "happy"?

Thank You sbryce for the vote of confidence. Harrison said he had no experience with worms, therefore he needs the book. I have a 4'X3'X2' wooden worm box that appears to be about twice the size of this box. The inside is painted with fiberglass. For heat, I use an 18Â red rope light on a timer (total cost For HarrisonÂs Box: Paint will not stick to galvanized metal, so it must be washed with vinegar. Then I would paint the inside with fiberglass (after sanding the rusty places off). That is what I did with my worm box because fiberglass is much stronger than paint or polyurethane. Keep the drain in the bottom, but if you run the box properly, you will not need it. The wheels will not help much because these boxes are heavy when full, so they are put in one place and left alone. Harvesting is a continuous process. I feed my worms in a clockwise direction, adding scraps and covering the scraps with the compost from the other end. Imagine an empty area in the middle, and the VC is 6-8" high all around the sides with a gap going down the middle. When the VC catches up, then I harvest maybe 20# or so to build the gap back up. It is like a worm race around the inside of the box as the worms follow the food. Harrison- get the book and start with a pound in a Rubbermaid tote. Harvest in 3 months and you will have 2#s of worms(min) and 20#s of VC. Your tray with wheels (30"x18"x8") looks like a parts washer or something along those lines. It should hold 6 to 10#s of worms without a problem, but plan on regular continuous harvesting. ItÂs a way of life for those with worms in boxes.

You might want to consider a worm farm system. These systems can allow you to manage you compost and worm production in a more systematic way. I suggest avoid the smaller systems you find at large chain stores. These smaller kits don't seem very well equipped to deal with the large amount of green compost waste generated by typical households. I suggest for the average household, you consider a domestic worm farm system in the order of 240 litres capacity or more, that works on the never fill principle. As well as producing what they call worm castings or 'worm poo', which is basically like refined garden soil, worm farm systems also have the ability to produce liquid worm concentrate, that can be diluted with water and used as plant fertilizer. Worm farm systems are a very environmentally responsible way to manage green waste. There are certain food waste that should not be place in worm farm systems, ( such as citrus fruits and peels and other acidic food waste etc.. ) however worm farm systems can handle most other plant based food waste, like vegetable scraps, banana peels etc... These worm farm kits usually come with worm farm care instructions to guide you through the process of establishing your worm farm. If you originally purchased worms for your worm farm they are likely to be Tiger or Red worms or a mixture of the two. They are specifically for compost and worm farms where there is a high concentration of fresh organic matter and lots of moisture. They will be most unhappy in the soil.

g'day clarebear,

i have used worm farm worms in my gardens i did it here so i had some worm action happening in the new beds, i also use a lot of mulch cover. they do need a lot of fresh sort of organic matter but they did their job, and now when i use the material from the composting toilet they are in there so they continue to work this material in the beds.

they seem to last well in the beds like i say while the suitable material is kept up to them so if you are putting your kitchen scraps or adding fresh from the farm mushroom compost they will continue. in brisbane we got a lot of rain in one season so the beds where very wet they didn't like that they actually climbed the walls of the house and congregated around the window ledges.

I accidently moved a few into garden beds when I used the castings but they didnt look very well when I discovered them, lol, I have a very dry garden though with drought tolerant plants so I think they were feeling poorly from the lack of moisture.

I am sure that all worms will be happy in the ground given moisture and something to nibble on! After all, that IS where they all originated from.....isn't it?

Here is an answer from a worm composting web page.

"Only put composting worms in your garden if you have a thick surface layer of mulch in your garden. Compost worms require moist conditions all year round because they don't tunnel deep like pasture worms to find moisture. If you cannot provide this environment in your garden, don't introduce compost worms."

can i put worms from the wrom farm into the garden ?
