Parole's other name Buxom Beauty

I asked my local rose nursery Silkie Gardens to make absolutely sure I got a Parole -at that stage it wasn't on their list.

I said to Diana that from all reports it was a magnificent rose and that I wanted one.

this is her reply.. note the name -so if you see it listed as such you will know which rose it is...

Good morning Fran ... good news for you ... Graham was at our growers last week and he has seen Parole in the field and said it was so awesome that he immediately ordered it for us! Further from that, I emailed the breeders, Kordes in Germany and asked what the heck the word 'parole' means in German and told them that it's a terrible name for such a beautiful rose.

I've just received an email return and parole means 'password' (military) and our contact said "...don't know what the hell Wilhelm Kordes was thinking when he called such a gorgeous rose 'parole' ..." and he went on to tell us that a rose nursery in England has released that rose under the name "BUXOM BEAUTY" and he also said "...why don't you sell it under that name".

As such, we'll be calling it Buxom Beauty because we've had the ok from the breeders own mouth!!

I thought I hade better at least answer myself or the message would be sitting up top until domesday...

..I first grew the Golden Showers rose back in the 1980's, and it was a fine yellow climber, upright and continuous flowering, making a good splash of colour... ...I've only read on this forum that the name means something else too... I've no idea what, and no urge to find out, so I'm completely oblivious to it... therefore the rose Golden Showers, is still as it is to me... a fine modern yellow climbing rose... and nothing else... and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it over here, to a new gardener who wants an easy going rose... ..if they give me a queer look, I shall have no idea why...

More and more hybridizers are "trademarking" the names of their roses. So when the patent (assuming there is one) runs out on their roses they will still have some marketing "control" over their creations. So I think we will see a lot of roses with "substitute" names in the future. And no doubt there will be look-up charts that show what different nurseries are selling old familiar Austins (and others) as to get around trademark issues. 'Lovers Delight' for 'Fisherman's Friend' will be just one in a long series of roses being renamed to evade trademark protections, from the way I see the future. Bill

I grow two bushes of this one and they both produce huge, fragrant, long-lasting medium pink blooms that don't seem to be terribly bothered by anything that comes their way be it pest or pestilance. Blooms are large even in heat of summer. This is a very nice garden rose. I highly recommend it. They survived the Easter Freeze this year with no problems and winter doesn't seem to affect it much either. John

Right now, sticking to fuss free roses actually in bloom or about to (re)bloom, *Anna Olivier - perhaps the most reliable ebullient rebloom in the yard - tied for reliable rebloom with *Purpurea (winecup) - flowers are very frequent if also very fleeting; but oh the lovely glaucus foliage! *Savannah and *Plum perfect - both get better every year; I like it that they are foliated all the way to the ground. Savannah's strong grapefruit scent is a bonus; blooms last a long time on the bush before dropping cleanly. *Perle d'Or - used to just tolerate her because of the tendency to chlorotic leaves but dumped lots of gypsum and milorganite on her last year; she's been bettter since - spring flush had bigger flowers and smelled very good this year -- still fairly fuss free There are others I might have mentioned a month ago or a month from now. (maggie for best spring flush; softee for all round performance; star of the republic for most beautiful flower and most haunting scent; yellow mutabilis for that je ne sais quoi -- but this is good for now )

Well I've ordered it from Treloar. I couldn't wait any longer so I rang. I don't care what it's called so long as it lives up to expectations. Congrats Fran, it's not even April and you've got me spending money.

Sally, you noticed that too? Fran has sucked me right into the advance order roster as well. I just ordered two of these boomers.

The names, the names. As I said elsewhere, Wilhelm might as well have called this rose Jailbait, aka Fatso. Who in their right mind is going to gesture at their garden and say, "Ah yes, now the second plant on the right is Buxom Beauty".

The main point I was attempting to make was that if you saw it with this name to at least know which rose it is. It's also liable to lob from England under this name if they are already selling it..

The other was the fact that Graham, who had not seen it before would describe it as "so awesome" when he has seen tham all - so to speak - as a professional.
So if he thinks it's awesome - why should we miss out.
Just a verification of what I heard on the radio way back...
And I suppose apart from the woman raving.. I thought - like Diana - what a hideous name if it's such a nice rose - but at least the hideous name allowed me to remember it.
