Mary Magdalene's fragrant pond

I've been talking about it, but never actually showing how beautiful it is. So I'll try to redempt my sins: Mary Magdalene, bathing with yellow Friesia, both filling the air with beautiful fragrances of their own.

And for a second, you can say those are lotus flowers actually, not roses. But I think that even a lotus flower, bathing in some tropical, calm, glittering emerald pond is trying to steal some of the beauty unique to a rose only.

Hi Tom..She is certainly the Queen of flowers the Rose ( Next to the Hibiscus for me )
But with thousands of different shapes and colours the Rose wins all the time.
Your Mary Magdalene is delightful, but as you say only for a second does it look like a Lotus flower.
The Friesia comes up well too... A great Pic and lovely presentation....Cheers....MM.

Tom, love the picture of "Mary Magdalene" and have been trying to find it's history or who sells it, to no avail. Hope you can help, Regards David.

I love MM, she stays small even in Florida which is quite a feat. She does fine in a pot. This week she is showing a lovely coral pink which happens sometimes. It looks like Lilian Austin. But mostly she is a creamy apricot. It is one of the few roses of any color that is clean in my thrip invested garden: She's lovely in a vase too, here with Classy Carol:

michaelg-- I grow Parole aka Buxom Beauty. This is it's first year but so far so good! It has a wonderful fragrance. The blooms are huge and they hold the fragrance and you can literally bury your face in the bloom to sniff it. I don't think that the fragrance wafts in the breeze much since it is contained by the huge blossoms. As far as disease--no disease in my Seattle garden this year. But although we Seattlites like to complain about disease, we don't have nearly the disease pressure of those that live in humid climates and this summer was very dry. As far as balling--I don't think that will be a problem. The petals have substance and the petal count isn't too high. In hot climates people may find that the blooms open quicker and may not get as large.

Low nitrogen & Low phosphorus and high potassium & calcium was what helped with my Betty White. Both high nitrogen and high phosphorus attract thrips. High potassium & calcium (2 part potassium to 1 part calcium) helped with Betty White. It's short since I use low-nitrogen. My garden is no-spray and I use organic fertilizers: horse manure, alfalfa meal and just a tiny bit of chicken manure NPK 2-4-3 (Coop Poop), plus red-lava-rock for high potassium & calcium. Barbara's pasture, Irene ford, Elisabeths china, Grandmothers hat, madam anissette, Mary rose, golden celebration, angel face, and Julia child. Scentimental and duchesse de brabant have a decent fragrance also. I also have setzer noisette and have been told it has a strong musk/ floral scent but I'm not sure I can smell noisettes that well since It smells lightly to me . I also have copperopolis bar which was described as VERY fragrant, but it's a slow establishing rose that puts most of its energy into trying to bloom , so I haven't had many blooms to smell.

Mary Magdalene is an English rose bred by David Austin (visit www.davidaustinroses.com for more details). It's a charmng little rose, that will grow up to 1m maybe, and is always opulent in blooms, even as a baby (mine is just 6 months old and is always in bloom!). Because it grows into a compact and rounded shrub, and has excellent fragrance and flower shape, I find it especially suitable for front rows of your rosebeds. I have few of them, growing in front of my Falstaff, Fantin Latour, Leda, and Centifolia Variegata.
In Victoria, I can see it's in Treloar's catalogue, in WA you can find it at Roworth's (for sure -- see www.roworth.com.au) and Melville Nurseries have it in catalogue too.
I'm not sure if Laurie has it, but I think it's well worth to have it and to grow it.
