One little goodbye

Dear all,

Hope you won't mind for posting this little message, for I'm leaving you all for a while. A course of things wanted me to relocate from WA to VIC, so I've put my house on sale. And that's why I have to say goodblye to all my roses too. Again, hope you won't mind if I post few little pics I've taken today, of the rosebeds I never photographed before. I wanted to have them in my book of wonderful memories.

Thank you all for your great advices, help, inspiration and your friendship. And I hope to see you again here, of course!

Catherine im so sorry for your loss :-( I love chickens as pets and we had ducks too. I love that special little soft cluck they make just when they're with you. They are so soft to cuddle too. Silky feathers. She couldn't have had a better friend than you and im so sorry for your loss of such a dear friend. At least her suffering is over and you always did the best you could for her. Sweet little Nobie has found peace. Her soul will always be with you. Bonnie

Yes, they can cross pollinate b'c if not all the ovules in the tomato ovary are fertilized by self pollen then the foreign pollen can fertilize the unfertilized ovules ( seeds to be) But the results of such crossing will not be seen in the season in which it occurs, with tomatoes that is. So one frujit can have both true seeds and X pollinated seeds. You'll only see the results of such cross pollinated seeds if you save seeds and sow them next year. But to answer you directly, small fruit size is dominant to large frujit size, so any X pollinated seeds may give rise to an intermediate sized fruit. Also since Brandywine is PL if you save seeds from that one and get any RL seedlings you know ASAP you have a cross. I think you'll find some excellent information and advice if you go to the top of this first page, click on the FAQ link and scroll down until you see the article, with pictures, on How To Prevent Cross Pollination. There you'll also find which critters are the most prevalent in doing the cross pollination and see what most folks get for X pollination. My X pollination rate is about 5% which means of seed saved from 100 varieties on average 5 will be X pollinated. But there are others who get much higher X pollination rates than I do. 2 little baths or one big one?

We have a powder room and a full bath in our house. My uncle is an interior decorator....we have the option to add a 3/4 bath (shower only) to our master bedroom, OR to expand the existing full bath into one large bathroom. He suggested that we expand/remodel into a larger full bath, leaving us with the same 1 1/2 baths. This is from an interior decorators standpoint, and also someone who doesn't have children. I'm more practical. It doesn't make sense to me to spend the money to expand the existing full bath into a larger bath from a standpoint of resale value, when I could sell this as 1 full bath, 3/4 bath, and 1/2 bath. Would I love to have that huge full bath? You bet. Does it fit into our current home? Nope. We live in an English Tudor style home, the rooms are typically small scale, with little closet space. Lots of character, spanish plaster, hardwood floors, etc., but that's the trade off. Our full bath measures (tile to tile) 4'8" x 7' 4". By no stretch of the imagination is this a large bath, but it is a full bath nonetheless. You can't use the commode and open/close the door (not sure that you'd want to anyway), because your legs are there. Next to the toilet is the sink, and directly next to that is the tub, and the linen closet is in the hallway. Our powder room measures less than 5' x 5'. Again, small, the door would swing onto your legs if you are on the commode, and the sink with a counter/cabinet that runs from wall to wall, is right next to that. So, based on your overall measurements and available space to work with, if you really want a full bath and either a powder room or 3/4 bath, I think it's doable. Small, but doable. I personally would look at it from a standpoint of who your market will be when you sell. We live in a neighborhood comprised of families with children - that's who our market will be when we sell, so I'd rather add a 3/4 bath to our home than to make the one full bath that we have a bigger one, based on practicality alone. And, children or not, I personally wouldn't purchase a home without a bathtub. But that's just me, I'm a girly-girl and I lOVE taking bubble baths. Good luck with your remodel, whatever you do. A little sad to say goodbye to my old kitchen

I was thrilled to see my 1960 kitchen gone when I came home from work the first day of house demo last week. Looked better already. What did I hate more--the tiny oven that took an hour to preheat or the sink installed 6" from edge of counter so I had to lean uncomfortably to wash dishes? Or perhaps it was the sqeaky white PLASTIC faucet? Now that the asbestos people are done today that awful VCT tile under the carpet in every room will be gone too. Our home had no cool Mid-Century charm that you see in magazines, except for one wooden slat wall that will be re-purposed. Good-bye Mid Century, hello This Century. I did not live in this home for even a year before we started our project so I never had time to grow attached to the chunky, closed off floor plan kitchen cabinets with doors that don't close. We bought it with a vision in mind so all the old stuff was just "in the way" in my mind of what the house was supposed to look like.

inspired by your post, I've made a drawing that might be helpful to you, and someone else looking for an idea how to make rosebeds opulent. This is how I made some of my rosebeds and of course, this is just one approach. You add your own ideas, plants that will make good companions to your roses. It's a fact -- there's nothing as beautiful as a rose flower, but there's nothing as sorrowful as a lonely rose. In order to be expressed fully, roses need company of other plants, with various flower types, shapes and colours. Only then they will stand out completely!

The reason I've made a passage in the rosebed is that I can feed and prune roses in the back. I'm feeding and pruning smaller roses from the front, but for taller roses and climbers I need more reach; therefore the passage. Also, I don't like to prune them according to some special method, but I rather let them grow and express themselves and I just prune them to remove dead branches and tame excessive growth (especially with HTs).

Looking good Tom what a shame you have to say goodbye to your roses.
I am sure your next garden in Victoria will be just as good if not better
I wont say Goodbye as I am sure we will see you again on Garden Web in the future..

Hi Tom,

What a lovely garden you are leaving! The best thing about moving is that you get to start a new garden from scratch - and all the mistakes or things you wished you could have done before, you can do! The worst thing is starting from scratch is all the hard work, and not having mature plants for a few years. :(

Where in Victoria are you moving to? Melbourne? Or somewhere else?

Tom,

you're an absolute sweetheart. I'd saved the pics to my desktop because I hadn't really realised you could interplant with roses - I would have made a terrible mistake in my attempts to plan out a bed tho, because I wouldn't have left the pruning passageway. Thankyou for the diagram.
