Is growing food really all that difficult?

Hello gardeners and growers!

If anyone could discuss their reasons for gardening/growing food, I would really like to know. I understand this isn't a plant specific question or anything of that nature, but any feedback would be benefiting. Most of my university peers and friends who I've talked to have never grown any food, despite it's a shovel and a seed packet away.

I just started growing vegetables in a few raised beds and pots (carrot, lettuce, onion, dwarf snow peas, basil, mint, capsicum, tomato) because I want to know exactly why so few young people attempt to grow food. I'm a full time university student living in a typical suburban home and I wanted to understand if it's actually at all complex but at the same time, if it's economically advantageous and psychologically healing. I've been doing some reading and in at the rate we are consuming food the demand will outweigh the supply to such an extent where it is no question there will be international tension. So why doesn't everyone grow some food? What are people scared of?

For my final year Industrial Design research project I therefore decided to embark on a journey of understanding and enlightenment and I want to figure out exactly why people do it and why people don't do it. Hopefully I'll be able to come up with a design or system that will find some sort of solution.

If you have the time, I've knocked up a short questionnaire that you fellow Australians can fill out. This is a strictly independent and academic study and everything is anonymous.

Once I get a good amount of responses I'll post the results so you can all see!
