kill Spotted Gums by ring barking

Can you kill Spotted Gums by ring barking them.

If they can be killed by this method how high up the trunk is it done.

Is there a preferred time of year to do it.

Whether or not it works, trying to kill an already large tree by ring-barking, poison or whatever, can create an even bigger hazard if it later falls on something or someone, or a potentially costlier one if it doesn't fall over and still needs removing because only the bravest lumberjack will climb a half-dead tree.
I am assuming you are not in an area with tree preservation by-laws - if I am wrong or you are unsure, you should contact your local council as there can be big penalties if you get it wrong.
If there are no rules about tree removal, then I would suggest you contact your local council - or another in the area - or the DPI for your state, as they should have arborists who can give you some information to help you make the safest choices and also protect whatever wildlife you may disturb in the process.

I second Alison's comments. Ring barking is not advisable as it causes an even bigger hazard. She makes a good point, an arborist would not want to climb a dead tree to remove it.

If the tree is in a forested area, then I suppose that is a different matter as there are many trees that die naturally in a forest and provide homes for animals whilst doing so.

Why would you want to ring bark the tree, anyway ?

Fledgeling, I wonder if they fertilized with chemical fertilizers or natural ones, like manures and/or compost? I know that chemical fertilizers can kill many (if not all) of the beneficial organisms in the soil, but manures and compost seem to increase them. I know for sure that they increase the numbers and size of earthworms. I even find lots of big earthworms in the pots I grow my seedlings in until they reach deer "untrampable" size - they must crawl up into the pots through the drainage holes. I don't use any chemical fertilizers on anything any more, just mix a little chicken manure or composted cow manure into the soil - it's worked very well for me. Since earthworms travel, they probably help aereate and fertilize the soil for pretty good distances away from where you put the manures/composts. It could very well be that rich soils enable big plants, like trees and shrubs, to grow fast and shade out smaller plants, decreasing the diversity/types of plants that grow there. I've read that some of the worst soils in the world are in the South American rain forests - if not for leaf litter, the huge diversity of plant life there couldn't thrive. Sherry

If you have a large, invasive tree...the lowest effort way to kill it is to pry the bark off in a complete circle around the base of the trunk to girdle it ASAP. Here's how to do it on Glossy Privet, but the basic technique can be applied on any tree. And a shovel will work too to pry the bark off. The reason why it works is that it prevents the photosynthesized sugars from going down to feed the roots...which then slowly starves the tree. This works on various types of trees. I've tried it myself successfully on Glossy Privet and Chinaberry already. Typically, the existing branches will stop leafing out and it will resprout from below the girdle over the next half year. Obviously, break any of those resprouts off, and keep starving the roots. And then watch the tree continue to die off after that. The great thing about this method is that it requires no toxic herbicides and little manual labor, too. Now once the tree dies for good, you can just let it rot in place for a while before cutting it down in parts at your convenience to prevent falling hazards. Of course, if the tree is a sapling or smaller and can simply be uprooted, then that's even easier and faster. And if it's multi-trunked and srhrubby, then girdling gets a lot harder. But for large, single-trunked trees...IMO, this method is the best option.

Now comes some tidbits from a Floridian! First, Rexes do not thrive in FL. They are grown in temp controlled greenhouses with swamp coolers, which is why you see them for sale. Although it may feel muggy if you are in one, the temp is lowered during the day and cooled at night - relatively. There are newer rex/rhizo hybrids I am growing with success, but pure rexes never make it in our hot, wet summers. It is truly the hot nights that kill them. 80F lows are not uncommon. In habitat, rexes see 68-70F at night. Secondly, whomever started this thread is growing in soil that is way too heavy. I use Fafard #2 with additional perlite and pine bark added. I also keep my begonias barely potted up - like a few inches larger when they need it. That ensures the soil does not stay wet, which kills begonias. If you struggle to pick up a bag of soil, it is too heavy. I have five foot canes in 3 gallon pots. I can easily pick up a 3 gallon cane with one hand - that is what they prefer. I'd have been interested in the OP's situation too.

Escaped torellianas and excess lemon scenteds in the forestry plot do get ringbarked in my acreage situation. Like using the old alternative to herbicide, and don't the birds love a outlook!
