Carpet as a mulch ring.
Comments (20)Here's the thing. our civilization produces an awful lot of crap that has to be disposed of. When it is concentrated in landfills, normal biological processes cannot break down harmful chemicals for a variety of reasons, inadequate heat and oxygen leading the list. Very often chemicals cannot break down when brought into the home as well, such as organiphosphates which are processed pretty well in low concentrations outside. (I realize some of you will debate this but I'm not interested in that tired contraversy right now.) Using a little carpet as mulch seems to be an ideal way of dealing with one form of waste. Everything leaches chemicals but I think it is counterproductive to be excessively conservative. The concern about produce near a highway doesn't have anything to do with ground pollution but with direct contact of chemicals in the air attaching to leaves and fruit. Plants do not pull everthing in the ground into their systems and if carpet does not create a huge health risk in someones home where they are breathing in its fibers and absorbing its chemicals through their skin how could it pose a significant risk as a mulch? It is possible I suppose but not likely enough to advise against it in my opinion. Someone can google the issue of whether plants selectively absorb lead through their roots if they like, but it's something I haven't heard about. The danger of industrial pollution is not how it kills us one at a time- individuals are living longer than they ever have. The danger of industrial pollution is that it is altering the entire planet in ways that threaten the existence of our entire species. This is a fact that the organic agriculture movement seems to overlook. When the oceans themselves are dying, mostly from chemicals unrelated to agriculture, eating organic brocolli doesn't do a whole lot of good....See MoreThe Case Against Mulch Rings
Comments (30)Calliope and Wisconsitom, those of us in CA can't grow grass, at least not without an enormous amount of effort (and water). Many of us don't have a blade of grass no matter the size of our gardens, and many municipalities offer cash bounties for lawn removal, due to the water usage. Thus, we have to come up with some substance to cover the bare earth to prevent erosion, retain moisture, reduce weeds, etc. Mulch is often the answer, especially when the plants are young. In climates where large expanses of grass are possible, the aesthetic has generally evolved to favor the landscapes that flora describes. That aesthetic traveled with the settlers from England to the US and is the dominant aesthetic in much of the Eastern US. It's lovely, just not possible here in CA with our dry summers and Mediterranean climate. Markces, your decision about whether to mulch your tree or not is largely aesthetic as long as you don't even consider the harmful practice of piling the mulch up the tree trunk. Do whatever you think looks best. One could make the argument that the mulch surrounding the tree is more beneficial to the tree than grass, for the reasons laid out above by Wisconsitom, but grass will not hurt the tree. As many have noted, the choices that one makes in one's own garden are largely - if not completely! - matters of personal taste. That's part of what makes it rewarding!...See MoreConcrete tree rings and mulch
Comments (3)One of the advantages of tree rings is that it helps keep other plants away from the tree. If you are growing your tree in a circle surrounded by lawn grass like in the spruce photo above, then it is easier to keep the lawn out, which helps keep mowers ands string trimmers away from the tree....See MoreJanuary 2012- Ring out the old, ring in the new...
Comments (122)Rosefolly - What a surprise to find someone here whose father invented the very thing we're talking about! Since I didn't touch the epoxy (wore new workmen's cotton gloves), that isn't what caused my skin to react. It was on my face only. The lumps were below the skin surface. But, it was combined w/ paint; so the mix is maybe what did it? After the anti-biotics, my skin was as smooth as glass. And the project? A great success. I'd painted the porcelain wall tiles, tub, sink, toilet in my new apartment. Not only did it look custom-made, but it shone as if all new. Even scrubbing w/ scouring powder didn't mar the finish -- that's why epoxy is needed in the paint. People asked me if I'd had the bathroom remodeled...a neighbor saw it, did his w/ epoxy paint, too. In spite of my little debaucle w/it , I recommended it to everyone. Sarah Canary - Maybe one reason "Smilla's Sense of Snow" appeals to us so much is because we're both January babies? ... As to the characters -- I'm not having any problems keeping them straight in my mind. Could be because they have such different first and last names...makes it easier. Yes, I agree, the atmosphere is a big part of this story -- really sets the mood....See More- 6 years ago
