collapsed pawpaw

This happened over 10 days ago and the pawpaw is looking perfectly healthy. Wonder what the chances are of the fruit ripening. The possum crew has left it alone lately.

What a shame, such a nice healthy looking tree. Hopefully some of the fruit might ripen.

Oh. Rose i am green with envy, both at your lovely green lawn, from all that rain and the large green paw paws.
Do you think it was all the rain after the drought that caused the fall over, with all that weight up top ?

Can you prop it up and pray for them to ripen, My Mother used to cook the green ones up with curry.

we got a couple of spits and watched it flutter by down south.

Donna....I know you don't like to kill anything, but I can't get this image out of my head. I got stung by a yellow jacket once and it hurt for days, like a red-hot poker!! I went on line, and it looks like these predators attack and kill honey bees... "Yellow Jackets are one of the most common pests, they feed on bees, larva, brood, honey bee bread and pretty much anything they can take advantage of in the hive." I have to be careful that they don't set up housekeeping in my compost bin....but they aren't welcome anywhere in my yard!! I found a kind of humorous, yet serious blog about the battle between bee keepers and yellow jackets! Here's the description of each: Bees are softly furred, industrious, communal workers who look after one another and build colonies that last years upon years. Bees collect nectar and pollen from flowers and store it away to eat and to feed to their young during the long winter months. Bees will sting in self-defense, but, because they leave their stinger behind, they die when they sting and are thus careful about their use of their terrible weapon. Yellowjackets are nasty, mean-spirited wasps who build their nests from wood-pulp, not wax. Each colony starts the year anew from a single queen, with no sense of contact or history of their previous generations. They eat bugs and other meat that they can lay their greedy little mandibles on, hovering around garbage cans and other foul refuse. They can sting again and again, and do so with malice and relish. Interesting discussion. Reading what others have said set me to thinking. It seems it would be best to consider growing foods that give high yield with not a lot of effort and they have to be foods that I like! I would definitely do sweet potatoes and some kind of bean. But what foods can you grow without the use of pesticides in Florida? I would use onions, garlic and herbs to help keep some of the bugs away. I've read also that some insects don't like marigolds. I'd have to research more on using plants to protect other plants from bugs. Of course, citrus fruits, mangoes and bananas. I read recently about a peach tree that has been developed to grow in Florida. Tomatoes, squash, peanuts. I like the idea of chickens for fresh eggs, but I couldn't slaughter them myself. (Yeah, I'm a wimp.) And a dairy cow would be useful too. But if things got really bad and you couldn't get butter or vegetable oils, I guess olives would be nice.I have no idea how many trees you'd need to be able to press enough oil to make it worth while and if you've got olives,capers would be nice too. I would really have to try growing coffee.

In 6b, I would expect even the cold-hardiest non-astringent Asian persimmon varieties to suffer significant die-back more years than not and probably get completely killed off sooner rather than later, even if you could protect them for the first couple winters to let them mature further before facing winter unprotected. I think a chance at fruit would depend on a string of mild winters. At the Wye research station, there were some non-astringent persimmon varieties that survived a lot of 6b winters, but the reports I read said they only fruited following 7a or warmer winters. I would expect about the same of the cold-hardiest astringent Asian persimmon varieties in 6a. Even in 6b, unless you live near a large body of water that would heavily moderate temperature swings and make sure that your winters were always very average, the cold hardiest astringent Asian persimmon varieties would seem like a gamble in terms of cold hardiness, especially if you wanted to get past any colder than average winters. American persimmons should have no cold hardiness issues even in 6b. I don't really know anything about the Asian-American hybrids JT--2 or Cassandra, neither in terms of cold hardiness or taste, but Rosseyanka I think would be safely cold hardy in zone 6. I think it's a great eating tasting fruit, but I think it's also very different from pure Asian persimmons (and very different from pure American persimmons.)

Ralph, is that guy hardy? I forgot.. As for getting to the exchange, I was surprised at how difficult it is to find it from main page. I just use these existing threads that have emails about, and go to the top and click the "Carolina Garden Exchange" button, and it brings me to it. Though I did finally find it from main page... (if not for this question I wouldn't have spent time to look, because got irritated before at being unable to find it, but found it easier this time for some reason) Go to the Stories and Advice and choose Gardenweb Discussions: Then go to the side bar and click Exchanges and Trading: That will bring you to a list of all the exchanges and can choose Carolina Exchange from there.

Do you feel less green eyed, Marion, if you know that the lawn is largely crowsfoot, nutgrass and other assorted weeds?

Rain + wind, and the fact that not only was it snuggled up to a block wall, it was growing over the footings too.

I can't budge it and sig. other is perfectly content to let it lie there and let the weeds/ grass grow through it :) Curry, there's a thought.

No rain worth measuring @ Rocky place. Tenants will be having kittens. Friend at Farnborough (just north of Yeppoon for the non-locals) had 6 inches. That'd be right.

O what a shame...well they certainly look big enough so should ripen ok.
Only trouble is Rose what does one do with 30 paw paws at once more fruit there
than a hand of banana's, Paw Paws and icecream, do they have Paw Paw chutney.
It will soften the tough steak we get here and isnt it good for the skin.

Yes, Rose, that's my memories of paw paws too - a decent bit of rain and they're gone. HERE, though, their roots lift concrete! YOu can't win!

Rose, I was having a wander through some sites that I haven't seen for a while and came upon these couple of recipes using green papaws. The salad one sounds interesting.

Yummoes, G. The pawpaws aren't in any hurry to change colour so salad sounds like an excellent idea. Like the look of the other recipes too.

i'm a bit late on this thread but looks to my by the pic that the tree is still growing rose?

irf so just lift the underneath fruit clear of the ground use a wooden box or something.

pawpaws take a long time to mature and ripen.
