Border roses in yellow

Hi all,

Just built a house and am looking at putting in my order for roses ....

Need help on deciding a border for up the driveway. Don't want it too tall, as is backing onto pony paddocks. I would like the roses to be in golden yellow or apricot tones, (front of house will have crown princess margareta growing up the pillars).

Not sure if to plant all of one variety or to mix.

Current favourites are Comtes de Champagne (I'm a david Austin fan) or

Golden Touch.

Welcome to the forum.
Your plan sounds wonderful-a sunny welcome up the driveway.
Personally I like to mix my roses but this is something you get to choose-after all it is your garden.
I love Austins but don't have either of the ones you mention so can't comment on those.
I would definitely include Jude the obscure in your border though-I love him so much.He will go with yellow or apricot.

For a fixed line border you might need to keep the appearance and growth habit uniform - i.e. one variety.

Molineux is one of the better border Austins - it stays low and behaves itself. Or try a floribunda like Friesia, but bear in mind it's a brighter yellow.

Thanks for all the replies! I was definitely thinking along the lines of species and near species roses, once bloomers who won't need any deadheading are perfect for the back fence. My main concern is that I would like to put in an irrigation line for the plants when they are new, but then wean them off of supplemental water once they are established. I know that there are roses who can survive without summer water, I was just hoping for ones that would be able to thrive. Lady Banks is a great idea, the year I fell in love with roses it was Lady Banks Lutea who caught my eye and then my heart. I've been wanting to plant one for years but haven't had the right spot, until now ;o) I also have several hybrid musks in my collection already, but I'm concerned about their ability to withstand drought. Has anyone tried growing these au natural in California? What about Placerville White Noisette? I have one of those in my collection as well and the back story makes me think it might be a winner in these conditions. Madam Alfred Carriere is on my wishlist and I'd love to plant her somewhere along the fence, possibly next to the big shed so she can be trained onto the pergola once it's built. Once again, any experience growing her with minimal water? Since I'm only a few miles away from Sebastapol I was thinking of asking to pick up my order in person, that way I might be able to get a bit of last minute advice and perhaps an extra rose or two. I know everyone is super busy over there now so I don't want to email them a bunch of questions, instead I will pester the kind folks at the Rose forums until I'm ready to make my *sniffle sniffle* last Vintage order. We have a Lemon Meringe, a sport of Westerland, that does well planted against a furnace chimney (warmest spot in our yard.) It puts out a great spring flush, and repeats at the top of its new canes later in the year. Then, the following year, we pull the canes horizontal, so we get blooms along the laterals. Hi Sue I'm trying to think of a pink that doesn't fade in Melbourne, but there are few. Probably Flamingo and Queen Elizabeth are closest, but both grow very tall in my garden. The Childrens Rose is a pale pink to begin with, but doesn't fade. Gertrude Jeckyll doesn't fade and has a great perfume, but she''s not to everyone's taste. Gold Bunny and Friesia are very popular yellows here, but I can't vouch for their colourfastness. All those are readily available in Eastern Australia. Isn't our limited range of roses a pain? Sue

If you want small, bright brilliant yellow, a hedge of - is it Golden Holstein or just Holstein is sensational.
I don't know abtou DA's as a hedge.. unless it's Graham Thomas and he gets pretty tall...

Not DA's but Gold Bunny (floribunda) puts on a lovely show, and the single Golden Wings is worth considering.

If you like apricot colours, then Apricot Nectar is one of my favourites. It has a nice perfume too. But I don't know how big it grows in the garden, as I have it in a pot, where it is about 1 m high and quite shrubby in shape.

Have fun with the selection, it is always interesting to see what things turn out like. And roses perform so differently in different gardens. But that is part of their magic!

I can recommend Fresia and Gold Bunny as I have these and they are just beautiful. BUT Fresia's blooms will wilt in intense heat. I also have Adolf Horstman and Apricot Nector. Just Joey is another good performer but is more apricot in colour than yellow. Sounds like you will have alot of fun choosing.
