Madame Isaac Pereire is still looking terrible!

OK, its been in less than a year and the other roses planted at the same time look great but Madame just gets long canes and NO flowers! What do I do now? What do I do with these long octopus like canes everywhere?

Maybe I should just pull it out???

Have patience-I am sure the Mme will deliver for you-she just isn't pushy. :)

I plamted my Mme Isaac Pereire in a tall (6 ft) rose tower, and as soon as the long whippy canes showed up, spiralled them round the tower, tying them in. New growths, on the end of each was at least one flower, often more, popped up. It does tend to look a bit leggy at the base, but I grow first lychnis, then feverfew, as well as a clematis viticella, and anyway, from about three quarters of a metre above the ground those huge strongly scented blooms just knock everyone out. It does tend to suffer a bit from black spot with me in the spring, but now (autumn) it is a knockout. It must be well over 6 foot now, after 3 years, and I am about to tie in some new whippy growth.

That looks very much like freeze damage that I get here in the spring all the time. If those canes were freeze damaged last fall they may never produce normal growth and will eventually die back. Although from your pictures the canes themselves look green and healthy so I'd give them a chance. I'm sure you've probably already had some frosts this spring as well (and we're expecting one here this weekend, oh joy!) so any really tender new growth could still be damaged again. This is my least favorite time of year for that reason. Keep it on the porch so it's more protected and give it some time. I think it will be fine. As for it not leafing out as quickly as the others, every variety has it's own time table for that. Some will pump out new growth at the first sign of any kind of sun or warmth and others will wait for it to get really warm, or hot even, before they budge a millimeter. Don't expect them all to react the same way to any weather conditions. Like children, they all have unique personalities!

I have to say she is finniky, but when she goes, she goes! Actually I remember when she was young in a differnt location, she was so low to the ground for a few years. Now moved, she is quite tall. When she puts on a good show, she is awesome and the fragrance is one of the best! Good luck, she will be worth the wait! Also, weather, very permitting IMO! Pauline - Vancouver Island

Hi Adam, Could I ask how old your Mutabilis is? Does it need shade at all or would it be happy in full sun? A friend has just given me a cutting of her Mutabilis - at this stage it's tiny (in a 14cm pot) but I was wondering where I should plant her. I have one part of the garden that receives quite a lot of shade from a very old oak tree planted to the South of it (but along the roadside so it's beyond anyone's control). Also, if 8 x 8 feet is the dimension it reaches in the UK I wonder how big it will grow here in sunny Italy? Cheers Tricia

Hi Eric, My MEC is not overly vigorous or overly cane hardy for me. From what I've read here over the years is that MIP is still quite vigorous in zone 6. Of course I still love my MEC, but she has never attained the growth that I anticipated. I love the foliage which retains a red coloration for a long time. I remember reading someone describing it as if some of the flower pigmentation of MIP had gone to leaves of MEC. I also love the kind of pink the flowers have, a raspberry pink. She of course smells great. She can get some black spot, but does not become defoliated sticks like a hybrid tea would at least for me. Here is a link that might be useful:

I have had a bit of experience with the Madam. She is a Madam at times as she is such a big shrub that she seems to take up too much space.! Now I have her growing up a pole she looks much better and is much more controlled. Poles make perfect corsets for big madams!
She had bad black spot and was very defoliated in spring and I tried all sort of remedies until I finally realised that she was not getting enough water. Bingo!! lots of good foliage and repeat blooms.
