Madame Isaac Pereire is still looking terrible!

OK, its been in less than a year and the other roses planted at the same time look great but Madame just gets long canes and NO flowers! What do I do now? What do I do with these long octopus like canes everywhere?

Maybe I should just pull it out???

Have patience-I am sure the Mme will deliver for you-she just isn't pushy. :)

I plamted my Mme Isaac Pereire in a tall (6 ft) rose tower, and as soon as the long whippy canes showed up, spiralled them round the tower, tying them in. New growths, on the end of each was at least one flower, often more, popped up. It does tend to look a bit leggy at the base, but I grow first lychnis, then feverfew, as well as a clematis viticella, and anyway, from about three quarters of a metre above the ground those huge strongly scented blooms just knock everyone out. It does tend to suffer a bit from black spot with me in the spring, but now (autumn) it is a knockout. It must be well over 6 foot now, after 3 years, and I am about to tie in some new whippy growth.

I'm just managing to get her to bloom twice (spring and fall with the latter one being much less profuse). It does get more shady where she is during high summer which may be affecting her tendency to bloom (but then her blooms would have quickly fried anyhow, I think). Still, she's a young plant and I hope for some improvement as she matures. The flush I'm expecting to start soon promises to be the best so far, a fact that I attribute both to her being older and to the unusually wet and chilly winter and spring we had this year. My few once blooming OGR's are also promising a good flush this year (if mildew doesn't get the best of them..). I do prune mine (conservatively) in the winter and I also help her defoliate. This latter action has proved very beneficial for her health come spring and summer.

I grow both Maggie and Madame Isaac Perrier. Based on your photo and your description of the roses rebloom cycle, I believe that it is Maggie. It also appears to have loose petal formation which the Maggie I grow also has. The MIP has the more stuffed petal look if that makes any sense. MIP in my yard is also a deeper rose color. If you post a whole bush shot and perhaps a close up pic of the leaves it would be easier to know for sure. Hope that helps. Jeannie

Hi Adam, Could I ask how old your Mutabilis is? Does it need shade at all or would it be happy in full sun? A friend has just given me a cutting of her Mutabilis - at this stage it's tiny (in a 14cm pot) but I was wondering where I should plant her. I have one part of the garden that receives quite a lot of shade from a very old oak tree planted to the South of it (but along the roadside so it's beyond anyone's control). Also, if 8 x 8 feet is the dimension it reaches in the UK I wonder how big it will grow here in sunny Italy? Cheers Tricia

I have had a bit of experience with the Madam. She is a Madam at times as she is such a big shrub that she seems to take up too much space.! Now I have her growing up a pole she looks much better and is much more controlled. Poles make perfect corsets for big madams!
She had bad black spot and was very defoliated in spring and I tried all sort of remedies until I finally realised that she was not getting enough water. Bingo!! lots of good foliage and repeat blooms.
