You don't need to dig it up. Just water with water with a few drops of super thrive. Every jan 14, I wish for fresh turmeric and ginger plants. It is the harvest festival called Pongal in southern india dedicated to the sun god. It is traditional to tie the ginger and turmeric plants around the neck of a new clay pot and cook the fresh harvest of rice in a risotto like dish sweetened with jaggery. It used to be my job to bring home a couple of whole sugarcanes strapped to my bicycle and dig up the ginger and turmeric rooted the previous year. The fragrance of fresh turmeric and ginger is unforgettable. The pot would always be allowed to boil over a bit signifying a year overflowing with sweetness and abundance. The green leaves of ginger and turmeric are symbolic of prosperity, the turmeric of auspiciousness, ginger for the spice of life.

Hi Jessie Of course they are going to be dearer at a time like that. I was up the Sunshine Coast last August and called into the Ginger Factory and bought two big bee hive $10 each and a torch ginger even bigger $12 and they were a lot cheaper than what you can get at say Bunnings here for instant. Only problem with that website is they never put the prices on why, or where they are I see you write Chandler and thats a fair drive from where I live near Beenleigh and just having another look, its the same now, ring for a appointment is not the way I want to buy my things especially if you don't have good health and why no mail order on line.. I don't want to ring or write to find out prices or where to go to buy them. I want to go when I am able.. I am sure you can see my point also..

Thanks for the ID Tony. MM you are lucky, when out on drives with my husband the conversation goes thus: me: Oh look at that, it wold make a great photo. Bob: Yes it would too...and he keeps driving. :-) GH. Gove is very different that is for sure. I'm not sure I would like to live there for a long time, but I will be going back, My daughter and her family will be there for about 5 years.

Thanks Alison - I agree that you can take a lot away from the efforts of others, and I devour every article I can get my hands on. I'm hoping that GA's Gerry Coleby will return to segments on his efforts to establish his subtropical garden in Brissie, but they seem to have moved away from tropicals lately. I'm in Brissie for a week in early May, but my time will be taken up with the course I'm attending (work, I'm afraid). Ideally, I'd like to see the Birkdale garden, and Suan Sawan in Bray Park, along with Dennis Hundscheidt's 'compound' on the southside. If only more landlords were like Dennis - planting a tropical wonderland and making maintenance a condition of the lease ! I lived in SE Qld for many years, and never once made the effort to visit the Ginger Factory at Buderim : now that I am 5 hours drive from the Sunshine Coast, I'm really kicking myself over that little oversight. Beautiful display of flowers, haven't been to the ginger factory for years.
