That's an excellent question, Karyn. Frst time I started vines inside I wound up having to relegate one entire light fixture just for their growth because I ran into just the same problem. Pity since at that time I only had maybe three or four different vines going and felt like I was wasting precious "light space". But at least now I'm doing more than a few vines at a time so I don't feel so badly. When I transplant them from cells (or plugs) into 3" pots I'll stick the skewer (yeah, I use them too) all the way down to the bottom of the pot and raise it as the vine grows. As long as the top of the vine is no more than 2-3" away from the light source, they're fine. When the skewer is lengthened as high as possible w/o tipping over, then it's generally time to move them out to the greenhouse where I'll carefully insert another, taller skewer and attach it with a sliver of of old panty hose. If you can't do that, then you may have to do what I did and just relegate one light source for just the vines alone. Linda

They do sell black edgers as kits complete with stakes. Yes they work. I use them in my garden to keep the grass from invading the beds. You generally need to dig down a trench to the depth of the liner and then peg down the liners with stakes every few feet. Then back fill the area. Since most liners are coiled, it's very difficult to use it for areas with straight beds, otherwise it does work great in most cases. In my case I have straight beds and unfortunately, the metal and straight edgers became available only after I've completed the work in the garden. Ianna

I have several streaked hosta seedlings which overwintered in the ground from last year, but got nipped by a rabbit. One h.'Blue Lightning' seedling is promising and just now develops a scape which I want to use with pollen from large blues. Last winter I started in November to grow streaked hosta seedlings from seeds provided by Mr.Hosta of Land of the Giants. Here are those seedlings of h."Blue Lightning', 'Topo Gigio', 'Fickle Blue Genes' and 'Dorothy Benedict'. They are bigger than last year's already. I got last year a freebie 'Powder Keg' from LOTG but that hosta did not survive. I bought this year h.'Justice' at a Hosta Library auction. How do I like them? I do not know yet. The seedlings which will survive my culls will probably have some stabilized divisions, but it will be interesting. I am interested to create a streaked large blue one. Regarding the "pants on the ground" problem I can comment as follows: I must confess,indeed,it has happened to me on one or two occasions. Both occured when using thinwall conduit the electrician left behind when wiring our house. So, I stopped using slick stakes. The stakes I use are ripped on my table saw from 2 x 4's down to 2 x 2's. I cut off a foot from the worst end of the 2 x 4 x 8's before ripping to yield a 7 ft finished stake. The rough edge of the rip cut, plus using strips of torn rag (as from an old sheet) provide plenty of friction to hold the plants up. Actually, I think the torn rag strips are the biggest contributor to holding things up. I haven't done the "pants on the ground" trick for as far back as I can recall. Archerb, you need not trim so severely to a single leader. You can get greater yields of nicely shaped tomatoes by doing double or triple leaders and then thinning away any misshapen/incorrectly pollinated fruits before they sap the strength from the plant. I usually start allowing suckers to develop into secondary and then tertiary leaders starting at twelve or so inches above the soil, then a space of a branch or two to go to #3. Takes a sharp eye to keep up, but eventually you'll get the hang of it. Also, you'll discover how to treat different varieties through experimentation. For example, Black Plum is one of my favorites for snacking. I find I can just about allow those critters to run up to 6 or 8 leaders and every leader will still yield big! The problem becomes keeping up with the tieing and shaping where you finally end up "hanging" rather than tieing back to the stake several of the many leaders. So far as stake length out of the ground, here in zone 6 I find 6 ft to be ok. If they get so lush as to want more I just screw on an addition with my battery powered drill and a piece of 1/2 x 2 by maybe 30" long. Comes off easy for next years use too. Larry
