Set 'em up again, barkeep

I have to start getting serious about my tasteless plonks, I've decided. My arrangements, as I am pleased to call them, inevitably look like crap - yellow, pink, red, apricot all thrown together to make up the numbers. Effect is not eclectic, not country, not casual - effect is milk-bar bucket. Every year I tell myself that I need absolute FIELDS of certain roses. Every year I get sidetracked by 'trial' novelties.

Spring 2005 is going to be different. Bring on the multiples.

Fragrant Cloud: bringing the number of bushes up from 3 to 6

Valencia/Adolf Horstmann/Just Joey: these work together Bringing the numbers up to 8 bushes in toto.

Adding 3 more Best Friends and trying out 1 Parole. Should work together.

The list is a work in progress, but that's a start

Are y'all planning on doubling and trebling or even quadrupling up any of your favs?

Nawwwwwwww-I like variety and very rarely even double up on roses.Too many roses that I HAVE to get-and too little room.
My vases are usually a mixture of *hopefully*toning values.
I go mostly for pink,buff/cream,dark red and purple roses-though I have a few creamy apricot ones too- so
i like to mix the bunches up.
Usually I have Queen Anne's lace,ferns or herbs in the vase too.
I do like the massed planting effect though-and would do it if I had several acres.:)

For vases I don't think you can have too many Just Joeys :-)
After that - Angel face is very cute in a small vase. I have that as a climber, a shrub and a standard. I could manage another 2 or 3. Generally I don't pick many but the David Austins don't mind being mixed as many of them are pink, yellow, apricot creamy tones and go well together. You can put a heap in one vase to support each other.
Some of the floribundas give enough bloom in 1 stalk for a small vase, and I like to pad them out with foliage, especially from my spireas (May).

I want to plant a garden for my family and plant flowers/bushes/trees on the property. also since we have a lot of land to use, we are also going to do a community garden. A lot of the fear of this is just cultural. I'm sure our ancestors prior to the discovery of the first pesticides, arsenic compounds in the 19th century, ate a LOT of wormy fruit, either directly or indirectly in processed form, and didn't give it much second thought. And, I'm sure that in many poor countries around the world, it's still the norm, not the exception, to have to eat things untreated with pesticides. Most of those people no doubt also just "eat around" the parts that are too damaged to be edible. They probably turn the bad stuff into food indirectly by feeding it to chickens, pigs, goats, or whatever which then provides a human food source. And, of course, there are many cultures around the world that directly eat and enjoy insects. Aborigines in Australia ate many, many kinds of insects. In Thailand, giant water bugs, dipped in batter and deep fried, are a gourmet delicacy and are becoming very expensive, the supply being limited due to overharvesting, pesticide runoff, etc. I also recently saw an episode of Rick Bayliss' PBS series 'Mexico One Plate at a Time' where he was in a very exclusive restaurant in Mexico city that was serving fried grasshoppers. Really, any time you eat most commercially processed foods of plant origin, such as breads, juices, etc., you are getting trace amounts of insect proteins. The federal government sets allowable levels of insect matter in all kinds of foodstuffs. "Zero" just isn't realistically attainable in a cost-effective way. Here is a link to an FDA publication which shows the allowable level of contamination of various types of things in certain foods. Some of it may be higher than many people know -- for example, 4% of cocoa beans can be infested and still be sold in the US food trade. Canned tomatoes can have no more than 2 fruit fly larvae per 500 gram (slightly larger than a pound) can. Ground nutmeg can have no more than 100 insect fragments per 10 grams. This is a lot of work to make but well worth it. It is an acquired taste dish; once hooked, you can't get enough. Serve with fresh mashed potatoes and celery sticks. Use the stock as gravy for mashed potatoes. Always tastes better as leftovers. Hope you enjoy!" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PREP TIME 1 Hr COOK TIME 1 Hr 15 Min READY IN 10 Hrs 15 Min INGREDIENTS 2 3/4 cups red wine vinegar 3 cups water 1 1/2 tablespoons white sugar 8 whole cloves 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 5 stalks celery, chopped 1 lemon, thinly sliced 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1 tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon pickling spice 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 (2 1/2 pound) rabbit, cleaned and cut into pieces 3 tablespoons vegetable oil DIRECTIONS In a large pot, combine the water, white sugar, whole cloves, onion, celery, lemon, cinnamon, ground cloves, salt, pickling spice and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then turn off and allow to cool. Place the rabbit pieces into the mixture to marinate. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spread flour out onto a parchment or aluminum foil lined baking sheet. Bake for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flour is a light brown color. Remove the rabbit from the marinade and pat dry. Strain the marinade, and discard the solids. Reserve the liquid for later. Heat the oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Coat the chicken with the toasted flour. Place into the hot oil, and cook until browned on both sides. Remove from the pan, and set aside. If there is oil left in the pan, sprinkle enough of the toasted flour over it to absorb the liquid. In a jar with a lid, mix 1/2 cup of the marinade with 1/4 cup of the remaining toasted flour. Close the lid, and shake vigorously until well blended with no lumps. Heat the pan with the rabbit drippings over low heat. Gradually stir in the marinade mixture, stirring constantly until slightly thickened. Return the rabbit pieces to the pan. Cover and simmer over low heat for 1 hour, or until the meat is falling off of the bones. You may remove the bones prior to serving if desired.

Loveseats - Love 'em? Hate 'em?

If space is limited (choice of either loveseat or one chair, not enough room for two chairs without crowding) and you need to maximize the number of people you can seat in that room, I'd definitely go with the loveseat. I've never had a problem with getting two people to sit on a loveseat, but unless someone sits on the arms (bad!) or the people involved are very small you can't get more than one person in a typical chair. It's also more comfortable for one person to spread out with her feet up on a loveseat. ;-) We bought a loveseat (really a settee) for our LR because there was only room with the couch for either a small loveseat and a single chair. Since the room is small enough that only two other chairs could fit into it, we went for maximum seating capacity. :-) One full-length couch IS mandatory in our household for napping, although since DH is only 5'9" we didn't need one of the monster-long ones, thank heavens. (We don't have a formal LR.) I do really dislike having only loveseats and no couch though, unless it's a formal space, because as Ronniroo says you can't really lie down (even 5'2" me finds it a bit crowded). I have never had a problem with getting three people on a couch though (in my main social group, sometimes people even will argue over who gets the middle spot if particularly cuddleworthy people are on the ends! LOL). I wonder why so many people have that problem. I mean, if you're sprawling with your feet up on the couch, or if you have enough seating where a third person doesn't need to sit on the couch, that's something else entirely. I don't often see three people on a couch with another empty seating item right next to it, unless the grouping is spaced so widely that people have to speak overly loudly to be heard, they're plotting something ;-) or they just want to be cuddly.

I have multiples of Just Joey, Fragrant Cloud, Pat Austin and Apricot Necter. Lots of fragrance for me. I do have single Austins in the backyard .

I have basically NO garden, so all my roses are in pots. I have been buying singles of things that I think I will like, to see how they actually go, what shape they are, which colours go together. I shuffle my pots around quite a lot to try out different combinations.

The long term plan is a BIG rose garden, when we move to the country, maybe next year (have to convince the other half that there is more to life than earning money!), and by then I hope to know enough about the roses I like to be able to buy multiples and mass plant in complementary colour combinations, shapes and sizes.

The truth is that small spaces limit what you can put in, and you can go for a garden full of Icebergs (the house next door to me) underplanted with white impatients, or you can indulge in whims of colour just for the hell of it, and not worry about the "fruit salad" effect. I'm a fruit salad girl, myself! If you have the luxury of space in a large garden, mass plantings just add to the stunning impact of beautiful roses.

Lizzy, I am with you I like the fruit salad effect of colour everywhere.I have a problem with bush roses on my farm because possums and rabbits tend to nibble on the roses resulting in the need for ugly wire cage things .
I have found that if I can get standard roses in the varieties I like.I may have some success.I like coming in off the paddock to discover that my double delights are bloomin their heads off .They are a nice change of pace for me.You do need to convince your other half that stopping to smell the roses is a good idea,even better if they are your own roses!
