Hey, TG. My plants come inside too, but a large mini garden had to stay outside. Surprisingly, more than half of the little succulents in that are still alive. I was very glad my Persian shield shrubs in the ground survived. Most sources say they're only hardy to Z9+ but, being from OH, "still alive at the roots" is more than fine with me. That's a maintenance-free shrub. After about 5 years which included last years' awful winter, I'm calling them hardy here, just not evergreen. Around the area, I've seen some dead Cycads, palm trees, and Photinia shrubs. We moved at the end of April, so some of the marginally hardy stuff I had outside may or may not still be alive, IDK. I didn't try to dig up Caladiums or Curcuma since they were still dormant and I wasn't sure I wouldn't slice into them while trying to excavate, so I just left them there. A jasmine shrub still looked dead or dormant when we moved, I left that too. There's some Aspidistra across the street that looks terrible but it's still alive. Surprisingly, some dragon wing Begonias survived in my Mom's yard. The next time I buy some of those, I may put them in the ground. Unfortunately the harsher than usual conditions had no effect on the stupid asparagus ferns in Mom's yard. I dug those up about a month or 2 ago.

It depends a lot on how sustained those periods of cold are. I am assuming you can ventilate it somewhat in the summer to help keep the heat down to some extent. I have had experience with gardening in a small, 'Three Seasons' or 'Florida Room' that had to endure a 'cold' winter range of 50-70 F., and currently overwinter many subtropicals in a large, very sunny, loft, cold garage with an extreme range range of 32-70, but tends to be in the 50's or 40's during very cold periods. Glad to hear that the loquat usually does pull through. That gives me a little more confidence that they are cold hardy enough to not keep protected all the time. The nursery I bought it from literally laughed at me that I was going to plant a "super tropical" tree like loquats in the ground. Now I'm gonna prove to them that they aren't as tropical as they look haha. That dwarf pomegranate is beautiful! Do you give it any protection? I agree, I really hope we do not see a winter like last year for a very long time. I lost too many nice plants and a lot of others were set back. I never had to protect my plants so much before, I'm glad I found C-9 and C-7 christmas lights this year (I usually can't find them) because I would have lost a lot more things without those lights in the protection! -Alex
