I've never done it but my dad has a few which he struck from cuttings. I have a white flowered Hibiscus which I will try to do this year. Check out this link which I just found. Hope it helps.

Hi Dee, I have grown lots of Hibiscus from cuttings, but then again look where I live. Just take into consideration some Hibiscus are tropical kind of plants if your are keep them warm. Some Hibiscus wont grow from cuttings and have to be grafted on.

One of my friends put her cuttings into bottles of water and when they grow roots she plants them. I have never tried that way, maybe you could try that, but this is how I do all my cuttings. Make sure your mix is wet first I use normal potting mix make a hole in the Mix with a pencil or old wooden spoon, scrape a bit off the end of your cutting, dip into honey,( a natural hormone ) pop it into the hole and put that pot into a plastic bag and tie up. Or you can cut the bottom off a soft drink bottle and put that over the top of the pot.

So your cutting is now growing in its little hot house. I never water the cutting again as the condensation forming on the inside of the bag keeps the plant moist, do not be tempted to touch your cuttings as you could disturb any fine roots. I cannot advise you on where to put your cuttings except a warm place, but dont let them cook in the sun either. Take Hardwood cuttings in the Winter and semi hardwood ones in the Spring and good luck. Cheers MM

Yes it is good to have other Melburnians around, and not just because we are much nicer people but because we can share ideas about how to grow things in our climate. I see some wonderful pics of what they do up north but no matter how hard we try we cannot replicate it. I always look for the advice of southerners for certain things.

One reason I put my town in my name was to try and get to know some GW members on this side of the city, which has a different climate from the east (less rainfall and flat land). Still struggling to find many though.

Sorry to dissapoint, but I'm from the eastern side of Melbourne. I do get what you mean though about similar conditions for exchange of advice. Mind you, I have such good advice so far and I think you have been my only Melbourne contact. I really just like the fact that I can talk to other gardeners! (anywhere).

Take cuttings of your hibiscus now. In Perth, on the coast they strike like mad. They like alkaline soils. I have two 2m high/ 10mlong hedges from cuttings, one is Cuban hibiscus with orange flowers and dark red throat, the other is a single red flowered one. I take semi hardwood sticks in autumn and put them strait in the ground, they usually take but if you get very cold nights follow mistymorn's advice. Good luck.

I like the idea of putting them straight in the ground. I grow a lot of things that way under the 'mother plant'. I seem to have my best success that way. I reckon if the mother is growing alright there, then probably the baby will too. (lol) Perhaps I am just a little loony, but it works for me.
I have some hibiscus plants in a lovely warm, sheltered spot, so have decided that my neighbours hibiscus cutting will have a surrogate mother.
If that method doesn't work then I will try the other methods mentioned above.
