What root stock are standards generally grafted onto?

Specifically for Victorian conditions.

multiflora first....dr huey 2nd......ummmmm.....maybe a few others floating around...several strains of multiflora......why?

I have some Dr. Huey, grown up from some old ground cover rose. It looks nice and thick, and healthy, and i thought I might try budding onto it. The worst I can do is stuff it up completely - LOL.
I also have something that gives little white flowers - would that be Multiflora? It was also supposed to be a ground cover, but definitely rootstock, with long arching branches.
Your the Expert Brenton - where do i go from here? Do I cut lengths and pot them up until they get roots? are their any roses that are easier to bud than others? where do i buy budding tape? Lots more questions, I just haven't thought of them yet :-)

I have a similar situation. I bought an ornamental peach tree from a local retailer purely for landscaping purposes. It was either the first or second year, after setting it out, that I realized it was struggling and eventually the main trunk died back. However, the tree sprouted 4 main new growths from the the roots. Since then, it has grown quite rapidly & is now bearing edible fruit from an otherwise original non-edible dwarf. The plus side is, they have a wonderful peach flavor, but I have no idea what they are. I even thought that they could possibly be nectarines because of the firm flesh, but they have a light fuzz on the outter skin. Like the other users mentioned in their posts, those type trees typically produce small, hard, non edible blossoms, & it did the first 2 years. After the main trunk died, the whole ball game changed! I love peaches so I’m not complaining, but there is absolutely no telling what variety was used in order to get to the dwarf ornamental tree that I purchased. Whatever the variety, they remain firm, hold a more yellow color with an ever so slight partial turning to peach red on one side, & then begin their turning loose to fall to the ground. This is typically an indicator that the fruit is ripe an ready to eat. They may be a mixture of peach, plum, nectarine, etc. grafts, idk, but they sure taste good, & hey, they haven’t made me sick or killed me yet, LOL !

Dave, I know that some multi-generation hybrids have lost the three leaf "tri". I imagine that this probably still has the three leaflet presentation, but was curious to see the leaf structure of what is a first gen hybrid (I'm assuming just a normal trifolate leaf).

You have the right idea Steve. :-) I don't know if you can root this species easily but I've never did research on it so it might. :-) Like many forest trees, that come from seed, they start out in the understory of the larger trees, collecting partial and dappled sun during the day with their roots in the coolness of the shaded, naturally mulched earth but It's consider a 'Full Sun' plant so sometime after it's establishment, it might require a fair amount of direct sun to progress and remain healthy. Moisture requirements is another thing to know and other cultural variables like soil ph, drainage and calcium availability that determine healthy growth. You'll have to look them up for yourself bc I've never grown JUP. In my northern, coarse soiled location, I've learned that most native trees to this area, like a little magnesium and sulfur in their diet also but not too much. Oh, congratulations on the new acquisition! And give us updates as time goes on.

Melissa, my suspicion is that this climbing sport of JC might just be a stupid plant! the sort of rose which puts all its' vigour into growing long canes and many of them, and then just doesn't have enough energy left to flower well.Maybe with a lot of attention and spoiling it could be nice, but I don't have the time, resources, energy or inclination for that. It would be different if the colour was special,or if at any point in its' residence in my garden it had given me a moment of joy, but no, nothing. I'm glad to be rid of it, though someday I can imagine myself trying a normal JC... Seaside, I hope you're right .However, SPS might just be getting too much competition. There's a huge General Stefanik next to it,plus a wild white hawthorn that I am trying to keep pruned so it grows as a tree. Last year I added a Cercis siliquastrum to the area and this fall, a weeping cherry. So it might also be too many Rosacaes in too small of a space. So I may move something in the fall,or remove the hawthorn, though it'd be a shame. Also, I want to see what Ariside B looks like; in the past I can't remember seeing it in bloom. So if it doesn't impress me, I may sp that. SPS HAS been great in the past, and therefore has earned my respect.

ok....if your dr huey is nice and healthy now......you can practice your budding now......leave the stock where it is in the ground....bud about every 10cm or so from the bottom up and then leave them(i assume you know how to bud?)then in may or so when the stock goes dormant...cut up the stock above each eye...de-eye each piece and then plant out...it's just doing things the other way around.....the stock growing now hosts the buds.....once they have taken and then dormant the stock is planted out with the eye already in place...hope that helps
