Blueberry 2 yr bare roots vs 3 yr plants
Comments (5)I haven't used Nourse for blueberries, but I am a big fan of them for raspberries. I planted 5 bare root blueberries last year, and I also planted about five gallon-sized potted blueberries from a local nursery the year prior. As long as you don't mind the extra price for a 3 year old plant, and you can get the variety you want, I'd expect the 3 year old plant to be bearing much sooner than the BR plant. But, I know there are people on this forum who are much more experienced than I who usually recommend BR plants... saying that they will quickly overtake a potted plant. -Glenn...See MoreBare Root Rasberry plant
Comments (3)Seraki: It's hard to look a gift raspberry plant in the mouth, after all it was free, but if the roots dried out in the mail as well as the tops you could be nursing along a dead plant. The timing here was not good. If you had to pick the worst time to try to transplant a raspberry from the East to hot, dry, Arizona, late July would be it. Very early spring would be best, but even mid-winter would be better. If you are able to keep the plant alive by careful nursing along as suggested above, you should keep in mind that many raspberry varieties will simply not do well in the heat of your climate, even with extraordinary care. There are some varieties, such as Baba, that are noted for heat resistance, but the majority will not grow well and produce in Arizona. Your soil does not sound so good, and raspberries will definately require a very deep mulch to even survive, but your main enemy will be the heat. The plants can sputter along, but will not produce fruit....See MoreBare root Raspberries - How long till they grow?
Comments (1)What zone are you? I'm assuming warmer than mine if you planted them in April. You should be seeing life now. Even directgardening has to ship its bare-root stuff in dormancy, so they should look like sad little sticks, but raspberries are pretty vigorous. On the other hand, I had terrible luck getting what I ACTUALLY ordered from DirGar and then what i did get did not do well...so......See MoreReselling Bare Root Strawberry Plants
Comments (24)i am very happy with the berry plants i have gotten from Nourse (MA), Indiana berry and Krohne's (MI). When reselling plants do know if they are patent protected it is illegal for you resell them. You need to get a license from the breeder/patent holder of that variety to sell them. Chances are you will not get caught but if you do the fines will be over $10K. So be sure to avoid buying plats that have pvp next to their name in the catalogs. And i have noticed that there are few heritage/heirloom varieties sold in the catalogues. I believe I will be selling bare rooted raspberry plants this spring as we need to dig up hundreds of them to keep them in check. We sell them in bundles of 5 for $5 a bundle, they sell fast....See MoreJay XX
